Compassion

Haiti Donate Online

My heart is heavy for Haiti tonight. It was last night also. I went to bed so sad. After going to El Salvador and seeing the kind of poverty that is probably 100 times worse in Haiti - I can't bear to imagine what the people of Haiti are going through.

All day today as I put a diaper on Harper or fed her or just held her - I thought about all the mothers in Haiti who are looking at their babies and children and not knowing where they will sleep, what they will eat or if they will have clean water. My heart is so tender for those mothers.
I know you have all seen the devastation and I pray you realize how blessed we all are and that your hearts will be open to help those who have been destroyed by this earthquake. Even if all you can do is pray for them - God loves the people of Haiti and hears our prayers.

There are many ways you can donate - an easy way is to text "Haiti" to 90999 to give $10 to the Red Cross. It will be on your next phone bill. OR you can text "disaster" to 90999 to give $10 to Compassion's disaster relief program. They will be working directly with the local churches who know where these families live and will be providing immediate relief to them. You could also visit HERE to donate.

There is a blogger who has set up a website : Hope for Haiti - they are going to be doing giveaways to raise money to support the people of Haiti.

Scott and I know first hand after going to El Salvador that we are MORE than blessed. We feel like God has given to us so we can give to others. That is why for every person who leaves a comment on this post and lets me know that you have donated (Please share where you have donated - I know there are other organizations helping besides compassion and Red Cross) - we will donate $1 to the compassion disaster relief to Haiti up to $1000.

Please only comment on this post if you have given money to the people of Haiti. You don't need to share the amount.

P.S. (and no one has even mentioned this but I wanted to make it clear) - we aren't doing this to say "look at us - we are giving" ........it's just we have been blessed and we wanted a way to encourage others who can to give. I'm hoping that is the case and that y'all know our hearts!

"If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth." 1 John 3:17-18

Kelly, my husband and I will be donating this Sunday through our local church. Our pastor is a former missionary to Haiti. He has indirect contact with a Church of God (Cleveland, TN) minister and his wife whose plane landed in Haiti about an hour before the earthquake struck. We'll be taking up a special offering, which will be forwarded to them. My pastor's kids (they are all in their 40s like me) were basically raised in Haiti. I can't imagine how hard it is for his family to hear about this devastation - their whole family has such a love for Haiti and her people. Thanks for helping spread the word!

Kelly,

Because of your blog and your experiences with Compassion my husband and I donated to the Haiti fund this morning. We have also decided to adopt a child through Compassion. God has blessed us with 2 little girls of our own (3 and 17 months) and I can't think of a better way to teach my girls the importance of giving! We are so blessed!

Sincerely,

Why is there now a prominent link to Compassion in your blog entry but not to Red Cross? People need to think about this: 100% of a Red Cross donation goes to rescue efforts on the ground in Haiti - the Red Cross has NO religious affiliations or activities. A donation to Compassion goes only in part to the immediate disaster relief efforts while part of the money goes to training missionaries and like-individuals, flying them around the world and getting them to try and convert poor and impovershed people to Baptists / Christians / Evangelicals. Think about it: does a woman who has just lost five children in the Haiti earthquake, is herself seriously injured and without medical care, water, food or shelter deserve to be preyed upon by a missionary? Please donate to Red Cross and Kelly, don't just pay it lipservice put a link up for Red Cross as well. I also see you have switched your personal donation from Red Cross to Compassion. Why is this? Last night when you posted you said your donation was going to Red Cross?

Kelly,

I love reading your blog and love the fact that you encourage your readers to help people who need it. I am located in Pittsburgh, we have a popular blog here that is trying to get word out about an orphanage in Haiti. Two young girls from the Pittsburgh area are living in Haiti and running an orphanage. The orphanage has been destroyed and they desperately need a way to get them, and the kids, who are all in the process of being adopted, out of the country. This requires a private jet and temporary visas being issued for the children. I know you have alot of followers on the blog so I'm asking you to mention this story. The blog is www.thatschurch.com. thank you so much!!

Thanks for doing this! I donated to Partners in Health, which is a fantastic health care organization that's been in Haiti for a long time. They have 5 operational hospitals outside of Port-au-Prince and 120 doctors and 500 nurses who work there (and they need more - if you are a surgeon, ER doctor or nurse, or part of a surgical team and can go, check out their website: www.pih.org and email them at volunteer@pih.org).

Please keep reminding people that giving cash to a reputable charity is THE best way to help. Going (unless you're a health professional or disaster relief expert), collecting goods, or giving money to organizations that formed overnight in response to this crisis are NOT good ways to help right now.
