Since I have been so SHOCKED that so many of you don't know about some of our Southern foods .....I thought I would research some of the foods you left me that I had never heard of (to show my ignorance. ha!) I bet this will be a learning experience for a lot of us: 1. Fry Sauce - two parts mayo, one part ketchup that people in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, and the Northwest eat with fries. Sounds pretty good to me.
2. Cincinnati Chili - which is not like the kind of Texas Chili I'm used to. This is like a meat sauce you put over spaghetti or hot dogs.
3. Scrapple - a mix of pork scraps, corn meal and flour. This is a mid-atlantic treat (Delaware, Maryland, NJ) I think this is a breakfast dish
4. Cheese curds - I didn't find a good explanation but they are eaten in MI, WI, MN and Canada
5. Pierogis - (I've actually heard of these but never had them) - Dumplings stuffed with varying ingredients
6. Tri Tip - a steak mostly found in CA (looks yummy!)
7. Goetta and Brats .....I know about Brats but not about Goetta (something similar)
And apparently y'all in the north (MN, ND) call casseroles "hot dishes". ha!
This was really fun to find out about different foods.
I will have to make Gumbo and Chocolate Gravy soon and post the recipes for all of you!
In the meantime - I'll just leave with you pictures of some Southern Sugar:
It's raining and BLEH here today so sweet girl was still in her PJ's and had some bed head crazy hair when I took these but she is still precious (to me!)

Boy am I glad that I live in the south...with real southern food. :)
Kelly,
Don't feel bad I was born and raised in Michigan and I have never heard nor eaten "Cheese Curd". I moved out to California almost 3 years ago and that is when I first discovered "Tri Tip" and let me say it is all that they tell you...it is a great cut of meat if cooked right....
such a fun post! i've lived in the south all my life with the exception of a 16-month stint in Seattle. so i've heard of the fry sauce, but NONE of the other things you included. but i'm like you, i'll take paula deen and her stick of butter with anything and everything!
your southern sugar is just adorable. i know you just want to eat her up! my two children STILL ask to check on "har-har" every single day. i just love it!!
I have ALWAYS love "fry sauce". In my hubby's house, they call it the "favorite". lol They use it a lot when they eat steak. I love it! :)
Kelly, do you have 'Good Times' down there? Its a fast food restaurant. If you do- they have fry sauce. And its delicious!!
I just moved to Cali from CO and you are right, Tri Tip is everywhere! Its really great. Its the tender part of a Sirloin roast. Yum! Cool post!!
Thanks for all that education I just got!!! I have to say that I was a little scared of the scrapple!! I hope I spelled it right!! But the best part of this post was the SOUTHERN SUGAR!!! So Sweet!!
Fun! Loved this one. I live in Texas and haven't heard of most of those! haha! I LOVE that pic of Harper at the bottom with that big smile! So precious!
Kelly- What a fun Post! I loved it. I am from Utah and Love Love Love Fry Sauce. We have Tri Tip here as well- YUM! I've also had Burnt Ends out here in UT. Burnt Ends are to die for!
I love me some southern sugar! ha ha in the last picture with Harper sitting up, My daughter has this outfit in preemie size for her favorite doll. Too cute.
you can get cheese curds in South Dakota too and this southern girl misses cheese curds! they are the best!!!
haha! Chocolate gravy! We've always called it cocoa and biscuits! :)
Hey, we LOVE our hotdishes in Minnesota...LOL We also have cheese curds and LOVE them, but I would not want to eat that fried pork pieces or whatever it was...I just couldn't ... :-) I have heard of Okra but have no clue what you would do with it...and that roast is a tad to red for me, I love my meat well, well, well done, say charcoal and I will eat it..ha! Your little sugar is soooo adorable though....Love your blog...Wendy in MN
What a beautiful smile!
I was raised on Chocolate Gravy and Biscuit Bread! At our house we like Hot Ranch dippin' sauce. Ranch Dressing mixed with Frank's Original Hot Sauce. YUMMY!
I have never heard of any of the things you listed!
Before I married my mother would make chocolate gravy every Sunday morning before church. It was my sisters favorite. I like just brown gravy on my biscuits.
I just love being from the south!
Wow! I haven't heard of a single one of those! I'm going to have to try the fry sauce.
Harper is so adorable! I think you are exactly right about the arranged marriage with Brody! She is for sure some southern sugar!
And that is one of my favorite dresses that I have seen you wear. I really like it in the winter when you wear it with boots. Who knew it was from WM??!!
Ha! I thought about your post ALL day. I just got on to tell you about Cheese Curds. Guess you already found them. They squeak in your mouth when you eat them. Like a waxy cheese cube.
Do you have sweat potato fries?
Kelly, very fun post! Here in RI we have coffee milk. Its kind of like chocolate milk buts its made with a coffee syrup manufactured in RI. I am a 3 minute drive from Massachusetts and I can't even get it over the border in the closest MA restaurant. Its only served in Rhode Island! Its yummy!
OH MY HEAVENS!! Those are the cutest pictures ever!
I'm from the South and Okra is a staple in my house. How could it not be? Fried okra with lots of ketchup! YUM!!

I am from Iowa originally...now live in MN. But yes...everything is a "hotdish". Down in Iowa we call them casseroles too. It is so funny how everything is different.
Like the popular children's game...duck duck goose up here in MN is duck duck grey duck.
Thought I'd share. :)
I must live in a box!!! The only thing on this post that I have heard of is cheese curds and that is only because a place called Culver's has them. Maybe Indiana is just a boring place to live. I so want to find me some of that fry sauce!!!
Cute cute cute pictures!!! Btw, I LOVE your dress in the "Sweet Caroline" post! Such a good color on you!!
Ya'll don't have a Zaxby's or Guthrie's or anything like that there? That fry sauce is the same thing as their chicken fingers dipping sauce and it is yummy.
I just moved from Alabama to Mississippi two years ago and they have things here we didn't have in Birmingham. They call crackers like the kind you get in an 8 pack at the gas station 'nabs'. They have this dish called chicken spagetti and it looks so nasty. I haven't tried it but they eat it up. They call an outfit, like what you wear, a suit, no matter what it is you are wearing. It could be gym shorts and a t-shirt and they'd say, "where did you get that suit."
Cheese curds are also a favorite in western North Carolina. West Jefferson, NC, is home to North Carolina's only cheese factory, "Ashe County Cheese." There you can try samples of fresh, salty cheese curds right in the store. YUM!
So happy to live in the South. Bring on the butter and bacon to flavor fresh veggies.
Your little southern cutie is adorable. I have an older man for her when she is ready to date, say in about 25 years.
My hubs is from Minnesota. Cheese curds are pretty much deep fried cheese I think. They are salty and they are heaven!! Everything is hot dish and bars (deserts that are in a baking dish and layered are bars) . When we went to plan out wedding, I asked my husband to be what he wanted for the grooms cake and he had no idea what I was talking about, neither did anyone in his family. It is funny how traditions are regional.
I just called your Dad at his office and ask him if he wanted to see some southern sugar......I just love these pictures of Harper and I just need to "nibble" on her!!
MOM
Is she the sweetest baby in the world or what??
That is some SWEET sugar for sure! Gotta love that smile. :)
Awesome post! I'm from Cali and have never heard of half those things. AND I had no idea others didn't eat Tri Tip!! I'm not a big beef eater, but tri tip is SOOOO good! :) I just have to add (I know it isn't home cooking), but for those on the west coast, can't forget In 'N' Out!! :)
Makes me appreciate being a G.R.I.T.S. even more!! Thanks for sharing but most of all thanks for sharing the precious pictures of little Miss Harper:) LOVE seeing her sweet smile!
Blessings today and always,
Kaye

I'm from PA, but had the wonderful opportunity to teach for a year in MS after college. You can have your okra, but Rotel is a staple in my pantry now. :) And I do miss the catfish, too!
I just thought I would tell you that I LOVE pierogies--one of my favorite side dishes. You have to try them!
--Elizabeth
We have a friend from Cincinnati that introduced us to Skyline Chili (Cincinnati chili) and it is my husband and oldest sons favorite meal. You can buy the meat sauce in a can at Kroger for anyone that wants to try it. It is usually found in the chili section on the top shelf. It is a cheap easy dinner.
That steak looks gooood! And Harper is sitting up so well in her boppy! Big girl!
Cute cute cute!
Wow...I was food ignorant! :) Thanks for educating me!! I just have to say I love southern cooking!
I also love your dress you had on in yesterday's pic. Very cute!!
Okay.. so being from the south I can say I have not heard of most of those items. I have mixed mayo and ketchup for my fries.. but didn't know it had a name and was an actual condiment!
Just FYI, cheese curds are fresh if they squeak when you bite into them. I prefer my deep fried. The cheese factory nearest my parents (Rudolph, WI) even has chocolate cheese; it's pretty tasty. And of course, you could eat them alongside your beer brats.
I LOVE this post, Kelly! And yes, TriTip is so yummy! I had no idea it was just for us Californians! Make a trip to LA and we can have a bloggers meet up with yummy CA foods! Ha! :) XOXO
My husaband's family lives in MD and they all LOVE scrapple for breakfast! yuck! I am a southern girl from GA!! and those pictures of Harper are so sweet :)
Many of those look good, but you can not beat Southern food! I've heard people RAVE about the fry sauce - I may have to try some. Also, my mom (who lived in Cincinnati for a period of time) makes awesome Cincinnati chili - you should try it! It's really good on angel hair pasta with shredded cheddar on top. :)
She is just so adorable... and what a fun post!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
she's sitting up so good in her boppy pillow now!
I can't believe that you have never had chocolate gravy! Make it soon!
In Canada, we don't have fry sauce, but lots of people dip their fries in mayo so I guess that counts. Also, I love cheese curds and perogies. I've never heard of scrapple, tri tip or goetta. It's neat how there is such a variety of foods!
oh my, scrapple and pierogies!! Now you're making me miss home (PA). Those are staples!!! :) :)
Oh my goodness! If any of you ever visit the Cincinnati area, you have to try Skyline Chili! It's sooo good!
I still can't beleive people have not heard of Okra. I love Okra fried and boiled. YUM!!
I am not a fan of the Chocolate Gravy. I can't bare sweet things for breakfast.
I think our Wal-Mart needs to step it up in the clothes buying!
Harper gets cuter every day!
Kelly,
This was a fun post!! I am from Illinois and have definitely had Rotel and Okra!! Two of my favorite foods. Some of the things you have posted from others I had not heard of, except cheese curds, boy those are good!
I agree, cute dress! I am thinking I need to come to Arkansas just to go to the Walmart! Our Walmart is good but it seems you all have bigger and better ones:)
Cute pics of Harper!
Cheese curds! YUCK! I am a true Southern gal and I had to go to Milwaukee for business and those things made me so sick!
I'm ashamed to admit that I'm from scrapple country. Blech! It's worse than hot dogs when it comes from the scraps (hence the name) that are used to make it! Gag!
Have you heard of/tried whoopie pies? We get them in Maine. Not sure how far south they are. I know they're not in Jersey. Yum! They're basically two round pieces of chocolate cake with icing in between. YUM!! Sometimes peanut butter icing or other flavors. I'm sure you'd like them! ;)
We love Chocolate Gravy! My mother in law that just passed away in Feb introduced it to me several years ago and we keep passing on from generation to generation...our kids (and us adults) LOVE "MeMe's Chocolate Gravy & Biscuits"!!!!
I have one I was born in Texas and lived in MD for 7 years. We use to go to the Duch farmers market in annapolis and get Whoopie pies they come in chocolate and pumpkin. My mom went back up there last year and sent some down. And now my Husband loves them I make them all the time. Its like to cakes with cream in between. I recomend them to everyone.
Jamie in Austin
Harper has the biggest sweetest smile!! Sooo precious!!
Minnesotan's primarily eat deep fried & battered cheese curds, especially at the State Fair. LOL
Did you know that fresh cheese curds (non fried) squeak when you eat them? They are so good both fresh and deep fried!!
Yep, Casseroles here are called Hot Dishes and to be honest, it wasn't until I was older that I realized they are the same thing. LOL Oh but let me please clarify, we do NOT sound like the folks in the movie Fargo or New in Town. The accents were way over the top!
I seen someone else mention Duck Duck Grey Duck vs Duck Duck Goose, apparently we just like to be unique. LOL My husband tells me I'm wrong all the time when I say Grey Duck. :)
I admit, most of these foods are new to me too! I'm from Texas and love okra pretty much any way it comes! And I can still remember when I realized my aunt had never heard of Rotel. How do they get through football season without cheese dip?
Someone commented about Rocky Mountain Oysters. They're also called Lamb Fries. I actually ate them 'fresh' when I was in Australia. They're not that bad, but I wouldn't order them off a menu...
I like the idea of trying new things though! :)
MMMM...Cheese curds...eating here in Iowa too! Some call it "squeeky cheese" because it squeeks on your teeth when you eat it. There is no other word for them to me aside from DELICIOUS! :) You should try them when you get a chance.
Harper is just adorable! I enjoy seeing her precious smile and it seems to get bigger and brighter everytime!
Ohmy goodness, those pictures are SO precious. She is such a doll!
My freshman roommate in college was from New Jersey and always talking about pork roll. I've seen it at the grocery and it looks fairly disgusting--kinda like scrapple!
My parents are from OH and we often had mush instead of grits.
Cincinnati chili is also sweet! I can't remember if it's chocolate or brown sugar they put in it. (personally, I think it's gross)
Also, I had never heard of Rotel before moving to Tennessee. I'd also never drank sweet tea or eaten grits, greens, or beans as a side, not IN something.
I forgot to mention that out west (CA, NM, AZ, etc.) they have no idea what white cheese dip is. I know that for me living in NW Arkansas, I have become accustomed to my white cheese dip from the local mexican restaurants. And when I moved out to CA 3 years ago, I for sure thought that they would have the best of it. They just looked at me like I was crazy! Ha! Boy, they don't know what they are missing out on!
The 1 picture has a Skyline Chili thing in the back, don't try it. It is terrible. They actually put a restaurant of Skyline Chilli in here locally and it never lasted.
First of all, cheese curds are absolutely AMAZING! If you're ever in WI, you should definitely try some. ;) They squeak when you bite into them - for real! There's a little fast food place near my parents house in Appleton, WI that makes fried cheese curds. We used to BEG my dad to take us there on Saturdays when my mom was working just so we could have some good ole fried cheese curds!
Secondly, we've used the Fry Sauce as Fish Sauce. I don't know that we did 2 parts mayo to 1 part ketchup - we would just mix up some ketchup with mayo and eat it with boiled cod. Yum! My husband is from Michigan and had never heard of it, so maybe it's a WI thing...or just a family thing ;)
Finally - I just love the sweet smiles your little Harper gives. I especially loved the videos you posted a little while ago where she would pause between eating to flash her daddy a smile. TOO precious! Those are the moments that make being a parent TOTALLY worth it ;)
My SIL went to school in Cincinnati and introduced us to Skyline Chili......it is the BEST! They sell it in the frozen section at Kroger. You have to eat it with spaghetti and cheese or its just not the same!
Hey Kelly,
My grandparents and great-grandparents (from South Carolina with no Maryland/Delaware roots at all) ate Scrapple. These were people who did not waste any food whatsoever (depression-era), so now that you've told me what's in Scrapple, I understand why they ate it.
Very interesting post!
Teresa
I am 99% posititve that I have that same 'wal-mart dress' that you had on in yesterdays post, but mine is black! can't beat a $14.95 dress!
I live in Pennsylvania...we also have scrapple (it is eaten at breakfast) and pierogies here. However, our pierogies are different than the ones I have had in Indiana.
Out in Pittsburgh, they have this dish called pretzel salad. It's crushed up pretzels, covered with whipped cream, and then covered with red Jello. It's prepared in a 13x9 pan and then cut into squares. It's a little odd.
Here, we have a lot of Pennsylvania Dutch-type foods like Shoo Fly Pie and halushki and halupki in our local cuisine. It's yummy and down-home...but it's no fried okra or grits!
Also (Could this comment get any longer?), I love how wide Harper is smiling in that last photo! SO CUTE!
Good greif!
I have a few comments:
1. Fry Sauce, that sounds awful! I mean, if you're into it fine but I think I'll pass.
2. Cincinnati Chili, we call that Skyline Chili here in Ohio.
3. Scrapple, looks like something I would try but the name is strange to me.
4. Cheese Curds, just sound wrong. I'm okay with cottage cheese but those things you pictured, look nasty.
5. Pierogis. Probably one of my ALL TIME favorite foods to date!
6. Tri Tips. Again, something I would like to try...
7. Goetta... those look gross too. I have a hard time with brats and usually prefer a hot dog but everyone has their opinions.
Thanks for sharing this post with us! ha!
TRI-TIP is amazing! It is tender and oh-so yummmmmy!
Funny okra story... we life in CA, just in case you can't tell. Anyway, my daughter at 4 years old was watching a show that was discussing okra. The dialogue said, "Let's go eat okra!" My daughter ran out of the room screaming saying, "NOOOOO, DON'T EAT OPRAH!"
Skline Chili is the best but you have to eat it with the noodles! You can find frozen chili in the freezer section of Publix. Frozen is not as good as the real stuff! However, being a transplated southern girl from Indiana it will do!
One more thing - anyone from the UP (upper peninsula Michigan) LOVES their pasties. They are basically meat and rutabega cooked inside a sort of pastry. My grandma grew up in the UP and we've gone to visit her brother several times over the years. We would always stop to buy some pasties - they are really yummy! I guess wives used to make them and wrap them up to send with their hubbies who were working in the mines. They would stay nice and warm that way and they are very filling.
Fry sauce...mmmmmmmmm. I'm going to have to try that.
:)
Glad I live in the South! One of my best friends is from Connecticut, and she loves coming over for dinner. She will sit and watch me cook dinner. The first time I made tea, she nearly fell out of her seat. She couldn't believe I put sugar in it! My cooking is like a parlor trick that she never gets tired of watching.
Kelly - you made me and the baby crave Skyline! It has cinnamon in it :) You can have it certain "ways" - a 3 way has spaghetti, meat and cheese; a 4 way is all that plus onions and a 5 way has all that plus red kidney beans.
Cheese curds are delicious and squeak on your teeth. I'm not sure how they're made - we found them in a specialty store in Cincinnati, OH. My friend who lived in WI found them up there and ate them. I lived in Northern Michigan (in the Upper Peninsula) for a few years and they had them there.
Goetta...you made me cry :) My grandfather used to make homemade goetta and my mom makes it now. It has pinhead oats (the oats you find in Quacker's is rolled/flat.), sausage and yummy other things. It cooks forever (something like 5 hours) and the way Grandpa (and mom) did it was to put it in loaf pans and freeze. When they wanted to cook it up, they sliced it up, and fried it in butter/lard until crispy and hot. I've never seen it in a sausage form.
You made me soooo hungry!
Oh, have you ever heard of Pepperoni Rolls? My dad grew up eating them in Fairmont, WV and they are SOOOO good. I'm not sure if they are local thing or a state-wide thing. It's basically a large roll (like a sub), with two or three sticks of pepperoni in it. The pepperoni is put in the sub when the dough is raw and then is baked. The way dad eats it is to put pepper sauce and cheese on it (he cuts it open). I like mine withe pizza sauce and cheese!
Thanks for posting this - it made me cry but good tears!
Seriously-- you have never had Tri Tip??? Yummy!! You must try some when you come to California even though I didn't realize it is only a California thing????
Harper is a cutie and sitting so well! :)
Where are the toasted ravioli's and the pork steaks - you need to come to St. Louis girlfriend - those are both AWESOME and yummy!
LOVE fry sauce! Didn't know how to make it though, now I do! Btw, I grew up in Oklahoma and miss okra so much! I'm trying your recipe from yesterday and since I am a girl who definitely needs to measure, I found the recipe on the southern living website. Here it is if wanted to peek at it again:http://find.myrecipes.com/recipes/recipefinder.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=1911275
-Jennifer in Oregon
That fry sauce sounds so goood... isn't it funny how people in different parts of the country eat such different foods. I can't think of many unique things up here in New England besides all of the fresh seafood. The only unique word we use up here is that we call our subs grinders. When I lived in the south and went out for a sub and ordered a "grinder" they had no idea what to give me. Now I'm hungry, off to fix dinner! Harper looks precious as usual.
Pierogis (#5) is also a Russian food. My husband introduced this to me. It is a favorite! They are usually stuffed with meats but can be stuffed with potatoes or sweets. After boiling them and they rise to the top, they are drained and served warm with sour cream. We love to put freshly ground pepper on them too. You can find faily simple recipes for these on the web and they make a FANTASTIC soup!
"Fry Sauce" definitely is known around my family. Add alittle Lea N Perrins and some Tony's and eat it with your boiled crawfish! It can also be found with alittle extras in Raisin' Cane's resturants in Louisiana and Mississippi. The others, I have not heard of...I prefer the Cajun and Southern food anyday!
@MC: Ohhhh, now you have my mouth watering, mentioning all those yummy PA foods. I could do with some shoofly pie and halupkis right now. And pierogies. I moved away from there 4 years ago, and the thing I miss the most (besides family/friends) is the awesome FOOD!!! :) :)
I bet if you're not from the South, you don't know what "hoe cakes" are?!? Much less, hoe cakes and white gravy.....YUM!
Man, now I am hungry. lol That steak looked good.
You have to try cheese curds! They are sooo good! When they are fresh they actually squeak a little when you eat them. You can even fry them! Yum!
Great post! It's fun seeing what people in different areas of the country eat.
Southern Sugaris the sweetest! ;)
We lived in Cincinnati for 2 years when I was a kid. Now we order Skyline Chili (its the meat sauce in a can) on eBay every year for my Dad's birthday. You should totally order some and try it out. Angel Hair spaghetti, thin shredded chedder cheese, oyster crackers and some onions is the best with it!!! You'll love it. Oh...and we eat normal chili here in Missouri too. Both type are fabulous!!! XOXO
Hey Kelly-
I am a Delaware girl and yes, that is scrapple. I must say, I love it even though it gives me terrible heart burn and I can NOT cook it right EVER. I have followed your blog since little Missy was born and I am so glad she is doing so well. It must be said, she is the cutest little thing. I could just eat her with a spoon.
Take care
I lived in Vegas for a while and let me tell you...tri-tip is YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!
The fry sauce reminds me of Zaxby's sauce. I have a homemade rendition of it that I make and I add a dash of worcestershire sauce, some garlic powder, black pepper, and wah-lah :) I have never heard it called fry sauce though :)
The fry sauce does look like sauce from Raisin' Canes!! it is sooooooooooooooo good! the scrapple (which looks disgusting to me)....it looks like our form of Hog Head Cheese, which is completely disgusting! both look completely unappetizing to me! I definitely thank God he put me in the good ol' South!
I LOVE Cincinnati chili. Anytime we visit there we have to stop at skyline chili and always bring cans of it home to share with friends! It is definitely different.
thanks for the interesting post on food I didnt realize how different things looked in places:)
I've had the chili on the spaghetti and that is sooooo good...especially with the cheese piled on top. Hee hee.
Oh and Hello little Harper you prescious baby:)
Pierogis are sooooooo GOOD! You must try them. You can buy them frozen at Wal-Mart. Yummy.
All of these new foods! :) I am baking red potatoes (as I type) and noticed your recipe...EEOO and onion soup mix, so I'm trying! Smells delicious! I am always up for new recipes!
I posted my week's dinner menu and added some recipes "Eat 'Em Up, Eat 'Em Up, Rah, Rah, Rah!" I cannot wait until your recipe Friday!
You've never heard of fry sauce? I live in Alabama and we love fry sauce here, except we use it more for chicken! :)
Fry sauce is the absolute YUMMIEST!!!! You can also add some bbq sauce to give it a lil kick! You should try it!
this post is great!!! I LOVE cheese curds! They're big here (Canada), and the best thing to do with them is to use them in poutine (pronounced poo-teen, or actually poo-tin because it's a french word). Poutine is french fries with gravy (beef gravy I think) and cheese curds. The cheese melts from the heat of the gravy and fries and it is so gooey and dee-lish...even though it sounds nasty.
And pierogies are a polish/ukranian thing. They are really popular in Western Canada as a lot of Ukranians live there. I make them from scratch (my dad's side is Ukranian), and never ever buy from a store. Homemade is best!
So, I didn't read through all of the comments - so this might have been explained before! The cheese curds I have had before came directly from a cheese factory (we actually went to one). They are the cheese pieces before they form them into the rounds, etc. It is very good, but you normally only find it around the cheese factories. I don't think it has a long shelf life, etc!
Look at that sweet sweet smile! She is so darlin'!!!
Cheese curds are soooo yummy! And if they are freshly made, they squeak in your teeth. Love, love, love them! :) What I really can't wait for is the state fair, where I will happily enjoy some fried cheese curds!
Sarah
Iowa
You are so funny: ) I guess every place is known for some kinda food: )
I am soooo very blessed to have been born and raised in the south. I would not change the foods that we have here in Louisiana for anything.
Plus you have the cutest child ever...Precious Precious!
I mean, can she get any cuter???! She is SO cute!!
Love to see the different dishes. It's so funny how we can live in the same country but the cuisine can be so different.
I grew up with a deep love for cheese curds. They don't taste too much different than regular cheese, just a little squeaky. I always think of Little Miss Muffet eating her curds and whey. I always got them at a cheese shop in Michigan on vacation, and now my parents buy them for me at an Amish cheese factory in Northern Indiana.
Cheese Curds ROCK. Seriously. I go to the county fair just to get some. yum yum yum
Thanks for giving a shout out to some good MN food! :)
Yay for tri-tip! Seriously Kelly, you will have to try some if you're ever on the West Coast. It is so good!
Thanks also for the interesting lesson on all the other foods you featured. I had never heard of any of the other ones you listed! :)
I'm from MI and I've only eaten cheese curds once, and that was way up in the MI/WI border. They were fried and very yummy, though. I think it's a UP Michigan thing.
Like the "pasty" that's everywhere in the UP. Kind of comparable to a pierogi. Sort of.
I love Cincy chili, it is a must to try. I have heard of Goetta because they have a festival around that food in Cincinnati. Some of the others were new to me. Thanks for doing this post, very interesting!
Skyline (or Cincinnati) chili is the best. There's a longstanding feud among Cincinnatians on Skyline vs Goldstar chili. They are both served over noodles with cheese on top but the taste of the chili is different. Skyline has cinnamon in it (and rumor has it that there's a bit of chocolate in it also). So delicious. It's always my number one stop when I go back home.
Cheese curds are great too! I'd never had them until I moved to Wisconsin but there's nothing quite like them. Most stores outside of the WI, MN area don't carry them because their shelf life is minimal which I was so disappointed about after moving to NC.
OK, Wisconsin girl has to clarify. REAL cheese curds are NOT deep fried. They are, for all intents and purposes, chunks of cheese taken out of the whey during cheese making. (Hence, curds and whey.) They are salty and delicious. When they are fresh, they squeak between your teeth. I wish I could send some to you, Kelly, they are DA BOMB!
cheese curds are AMAZING. Especially when they are so fresh they are squeaky!! :) you can also deep fry them -- oh, boy, are those delicious. :)
and yes, we from MN do call casseroles "hotdishes" :)
Cincy Chili is so good! It has chocolate in it too! Cheese Curds are also good! You can find them at any Culvers and of course up here anywhere in WI, where I live!
choc gravy is a family favorite of ours here in cali. it honestly makes me sad that y'all haven't had tri-tip it's fantastic! now one other thing you used to talk about on your blog all the time that i had to ask a southern friend what it was... petit fours? i didn't even know how to pronounce it! i don't know if we can even find them in a bakery here. i might have to inquire, cause they look like way too much work to make.
Cheese curd IS HUGE in UTAH! I love it, and its a treat everytime we head up North out of SOUTHERN UT. love the bottom pic. of sweet happy Harper!
I live in Las Vegas, Nevada and have never heard of fry sauce. A lot of people here do ranch dressing with their french fries. Mayo and ketchup...never seen it here as a fry sauce. Mayo on my friends...yikes.
ADORABLE pictures!! She is a cutie pie.
Love that southern sugar!! She is too precious. I never knew there was such a thing as the fry sauce! I eat mayo on my fries all the time! Done that since I was little. :)
Are cheese curds deep fried cheese? The fry sauce does sound yummy!
Harper is just the happiest baby...love those pics!
And I have that same dress, but in solid black...so comfy & cute!!
I don't think I've heard of any of those things. I've lived in GA for nearly 20 years, but my hubby says I'm still not officially Southern since I don't drink Sweet Tea. ;o) BTW - the pictures of Harper are adorable! I love pj/bedhead pics!
Scrapple is Pa dutch favorite! I have grown up and it sooo good! This is making me hungry for it... i might just have to go and make some. Also don't forget about shoo fly pie or funny cake... they are super yummy!
OH MY GOSH! I was going to put perogies but thought- come on- WHO hasnt had perogies. Man are you missing out. Go down to the grocery store... Buy some Potatoe Cheddar Cheemo brand perogies in the freezer section... boil them up and eat them with 1)sour cream and bacon bits or 2) my personal fav... strawberry jam!!
You are totally missing out on a quick easy delicious meal option!! If you were REALLY lucky like me you would have a ukranian mother in law who makes homemade ones and brings them over!
Fry Sauce is the BEST..some of us eat it here in AZ. I also grew up eating Tri Tip on the grill...yummmo!!
Isn't it sweet when they get enough hair to have bed head?
I am so glad you say "Wal-Mart" correctly...Pioneer Woman says "The Wal-Marts" and it drives me BATTY!!!!
.....about the fry sauce...have you ever dipped fries in to straight up real mayo? mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I am still in shock that people didn't know what okra was...fried, stewed, in gumbo, out it is simply amazing :)
We also LOVE chocolate gravy!!! So good!
What a fun post :)
that last picture is SOOO cute! These foods seem rather interesting! None of them has this southern girl has ever eaten!
From one Okra lover to another, you'll love fry sauce! Very yummy.
Born and raised in Utah, I do miss my fry sauce. But please don't forget Rhode Island's very own hot weiners. It's a cultural experience.
Fry sauce seems a lot like Canes or Abner's sauce, no? I sure do love my southern food! :D
Your right, your southern surger sure does look just as cute in her pjs as any other time! :)
I've let myself believe for the past 13 years that my friends and I invented "fry sauce" when we were in Jr. High. Apparently not! It's so wonderful!
Tri-Tip is awesome. If anyone lives around Springfield/Branson (like me) you can get the best Tri-Tip at Harter House. Don't forget to ask for the red rub too!
Cheese Curds = Cheddar Bites at Sonic, you know what they are now right?? Haha
Cheese curds are to DIE for!! I am from Iowa. they are very popular at the famous Iowa State Fair. They are cheese crumbles battered and deep fried. Dip them in ketchup or ranch dressing!!
This Badger girl says YES to Wisconsin cheesecurds! LOVE THEM! Now that I live in the bluegrass state, I can't find them.
I loved reading this post with various foods from around the country. I wonder if you have heard of tripe. My husband is from Vermont and evidently they eat this up there. It is the lining of a cow's stomach (I think). They prefer to eat it pickled. I have only seen my brother-in-law cook it, but have never had the courage to try it. (Nor do I plan to.) More than any of the foods you posted about, I loved the pictures of that Southern sugar at the end. Harper is absolutely the most precious baby!
What an informative post! I've lived in Michigan all my life and I have NEVER heard (or seen) Cheese Curds. The Scrapple is...ummm... interesting!!
The BEST part was the sweet smile on Harper!!! I think your daughter is the cutest little thing around.
I found your blog (somehow) several months back and just LOVE checking it (I guess I'm a "blog stalker"). I look so forward to seeing pictures of Harper, and I'll tell you what - that small video from the other day just made me laugh... I watched it like three times in a row. I couldn't help but laugh out loud when she'd look at her daddy and flash a huge smile!
I sure am glad I live in the south! Don't know if I could survive on sheese curd and fry sauce...yuk!
Give me some okra and a tomato sandwich!
Eek, I don't know if I could handle the scrapple...
I hope you do make some of the "southern foods" soon.. I'd love to read more about them. It's so interesting for a northerner like me who has never even been south of Iowa (eek!).
Fun post! Now I'm hungry....
You can get tri Tip at Harps in Bella Vista, AR and it makes great BBQ when rubbed with Raven's Seasoning from Armona, California.
i can't believe you've never heard of fry sauce! it is one of the best inventions ever. ;)
I've never heard of any of those things...the pierogis look a little bit like my empanadas...wonder if they are similar?
I love the idea of fry sauce. I usually just dip my fries in mustard. LOL
Kelly, I think the "fry sauce" is also what they use with fried chicken tenders at some of the restaurants around Alabama. I grew up in Dothan, AL and never saw it, but did in college when i went to Troy at a local place called "Crowe's". (Best chicken...) and they use something like it here in Athens, AL at Roosters. the only thing that may be different is around here, they add a few poppy seeds to it. (i guess to make it pretty??)
These may be some of my favorite pictures of the Little Bit to date!! What a little sweetbabe!
I'm from Oregon, but live in Little Rock and I have yet to find fry sauce OR tri-tip here. I love both of them! Hubby and I have been trying to find a replacement for the tri-tip but nothing's quite the same, but we just make our own fry sauce :)
Pierogis are so good. I ate them when I lived in Canada - topped with bacon and sour cream. Yum, now I want some!!
Summer
Love, love, LOVE your post today! So glad I'm a southern girl! Your southern sugar is too cute for words. She looks a lot like her mama these days. I'm so going to try the okra recipe from yesterday's post. I love me some okra!
Yummmmm, I love pierogies, Mrs. T's are the best! :)
I'm originally from Indiana and if it weren't for Cracker Barrel, I would have had no idea what fried okra is. Haven't got a clue how to make it, but I'll order it when I stop in there. :)
Hey Kelly, down under here in Australia we LOVE to eat Vegemite, it's a concentrated yeast extract that we eat on bread, it's yummy!! And it was my little M's first food to taste ;)
Most American's I've met think it's disgusting, but my darling (American) husband has embraced it and now eats it more than me :)
Fun post, thanks, i've never heard of or eaten half those meals.
KE from Sydney
Oh my gosh I can't believe you've never heard of cheese curds!!! Now you've made me want some!! :) I'm from MN and I am OBSESSED with okra, but the only time I can get it is when we go to LA to visit my inlaws...there is a Church's Chicken on the way and we stop both ways so I can get a LARGE okra :)
PS....Harper is ALWAYS precious!
~Amber
I made homemade food for both my boys and I loved it. I used the book "First Meals" by Annabel Karmel. It was very helpful and the recipes get more complex as the kids grow. Good luck!
I am from WI and LOVE cheese curds. I now live in Houston andd miss the cheese from WI. If you ever try cheese curds or string cheese make sure it is from WI or you will be disappointed, believe me:)
I moved from California. You can actually by Tri-tip here in Arkansas! We have only found it at the Harps in Springdale, but it is sooo good!!! As for Pierogis, my mom is 100% Polish so these are a permenant fixture around our house. They sell them at Wal-mart. The potato and onion are very very good..
:-)
My Aunt taught me about "fry" sauce when I was a kid. She was from IL. The funny thing is the only place that I mix ketchup and mayo for my fries is when I eat Chick-fil-a!
Scrapple??? EEEEEEEEWWWWWWWw. Even the name of it ruined my appetite.
I'll take our down-home Southern fried delicacies ANY day over that! ;)
Melissa @ www.fordsbigbluehouse.blogspot.com
I went to college in a different town in Missouri than I grew up in and they served "fry sauce" but they actually put it on their burgers. Guess it gets both the people who like mayo and those who like ketchup. But it is weird how one country can have so many variations of food choices. Gotta love America!
In Germany they use mayo to dip their fries. They rarely even offer ketchup at restraunts. BTW Old Bay seasoning is put on EVERYTHING in Maryland and pop is called soda.
This was soooooo much fun to read...
1. I didn't know there was a name for what I do with my fries - now I know! Here I thought I was doing something special!
2. Scrapple - in one word - WHY! Why would you eat something that looks, smells and tastes like that!
3. Pierogis - Nirvana sauteed in in butter with onions...mmmm mmmm good.
4. Cincinnati Chili - funny story here...had a friend visiting from out of town and my husband says let's go get spaghetti...so we are thinking Italian. Not my husband, we end up in joint with antlers on the wall and Cincinnati Chili on the plate. Hmmm...note to self...don't let him pick a restaurant I am not familiar with!
5. Trader Joes has TriTip and it is as good as it looks.
6. cheese curds - I am intrigued!
This was great...thanks for the tour across the nation!
Shalom,
Denise
I have a friend that's a trainee chef and she says that fry sauce is the same as Thousand Island dressing - mayo & ketchup. (I don't know if you have/ know about Thousand Island dressing in the US? But that's what it's called here in Australia. We use it on salads mostly.)
PS. Chocolate gravy? I need to see that! And I've always wanted to know what "biscuits" are, because a lot of times I see them mentioned with gravy, and here in Australia a biscuit is a cookie, so that just seems bizarre to me! (But then again, we do love our salty yeast spread otherwise known as Vegemite, so who are we to judge?!)
your version of sugar is to die for... miss harper is such a darling girl. love the last picture. that grin is scrumptious!! btw, scrapple is a wonderful dish we in PA eat for breakfast. best eaten w/ a heapin' spoonful of apple butter on top... have you heard or eaten apple butter?
I live in Texas and I gotta tell ya the fry sauce.....YUM..especially with Chick Fil A waffle frys, kinda like thousand island w/out the relish stuff. Pierogis..well Schwans (I don't know if you have a Schwans man) have mashed potato pierogi and I usually sautee with mushrooms onions and peppers...It is also YUM.
Oh, and what in the WORLD are grits?
What's funny is that I am Southern, but I always do the ketchup and mayo to dip my fries in....so yummy!
Oh girl...this post has my mouth watering! I'm from Cincinnati and every time we go back we indulge in chili and goetta...it's the best. I actually have some frozen goetta from our last trip and if we lived closer to each other I would have you guys over for breakfast so that you could experience it for yourselves! Thanks for the yummy walk around the country!
I've never heard of most of those either! But, I did just have homemade gumbo last week with lots of okra! Ha!!
I love how you look like a million bucks dressed in your Walmart dresses! I just did a post the other day on how you don't have to shop at boutiques to look fabulous and I think you are a prime example! Makes me want to make a trip to Walmart. LOL!
Tri tip rocks! I live in CA and it's my favorite of the red meats!
Stacy Williams
I can't believe that you have never heard of cheese curds!! They are truly amazing!! Especially if you love cheese!!
I am from just south of Santa Maria, where tri tip is so famous and I couldn't love a cut of meat more! When ever anyone comes to visit, it is a staple must for Santa Barbara. I do love my fair share of southern food though!
I had cheese curds in MN last summer, and they're WONDERFUL(ly addicting)! You MUST try them, if you get a chance.
Tri-tip is wonderful. I live a little north of you in MO, and we have it at Harter House. Check around and you just might find it. I know if you're in Branson, you can get it there.
I've lived in NJ since I was about 4 years old and still don't consider myself a "Jersey Girl"...but I feel the need to represent the state!! I have personally never seen or heard of scrapple...And there was a commenter who mentioned pork roll. This is sliced super thin, heated on the grill and eaten with an egg and cheese breakfast sandwich - sort of like taylor ham, etc. (only thinner). It looks kinda gross uncooked but once it's grilled it's just another way to eat thin, crispy, greasy pork! Can't go wrong with that!!
Harper is beautiful as always!! She's just so dang cute!
I guess since I have lived in the south all my life I have never heard of any of these items! The Tri Tip steak looks very good, and the fry sauce sounds good. It looks like comeback in a way? Great post and Harper is just a precious doll!
Just reminds me again of how thankful I am to be Southern. I don't think I could live on northern food.
The fry sauce isn't foreign to me but here we call it chicken sauce and it is served with chicken fingers.
Love the Fry Sauce. I grow up in Montana and a place called artic circle had the best. Love the pics of Harper, makes me want to smile!!
Yup, you're right - that's some good southern sugar! LOVE that last picture! I think that is my favorite one of all time (well, yet, anyway! haha!). That smile is perfect! Now, Kelly...we know that's not bed head. We know you are teasin' up that child's hair! ;o)
Fry sauce? Now that sounds real good (anything with mayo). And Scrapple? That sure does sound like something we'd eat down here, doesn't it?? It just sounds (and looks) like something we'd get at the Waffle House...only we'd get it scattered, smothered, covered, and chunked! Right?! haha!
Hi Kelly it's stacey from NJ again aspenbergfam.blogspot.com I have lived in NJ my whole life born and raised and i saw a comment about Pork Roll!! AWESOME!! Most commonly on a Pork Roll Egg and cheese breakfast sandwhich served on Kaiser roll but if your from central or North Jersey it's referred to as a hard roll! We eat it any time of the day but its delicious!!!! We love it! I have heard and seen scrapple but mostly when we going camping in Pa people seem to love it out there!! Just though i should share!
That little girl of yours is downright precious!
Living out west for most of my life, I've had fry sauce and hated it. After moving to UT three years ago, there are several local places that substitute BBQ sauce for the ketchup....way too yummy!
I love fried cheese curds! This post made me want to go out to the fair and buy some...yummy!
By the way, I love your blog!
I think that scrapple is made in towns that process pork...I remember hearing it was what was "left over"...they said it was everything but the squeal. That fry sauce is the same as Zaxby's Zax Sauce, there's one in Fayetteville. Also, that Cincinnatti Chili is called Spaghetti Red I think. There is a restaurant/diner in Joplin (where I was raised) that makes it. It's pretty much Chili on top of Spaghetti. They serve it with onions, crackers and pickles. And it's pretty awesome!!
I have lived here in AR most of my life and have not heard of most of the foods that you just listed so dont feel so bad! :) I have done the mayo and ketchup mix and it is DELISH!!!
I don't eat red meat, but I hear about tri tip on radio cooking shows and all over here in CA.
Thank your mom for posting her muffin recipe on her blog. I can't wait to try it! : )
Cheese curds are great! You can buy them at a cheese shop behind Lambert's, home of the flying roll, near Springfield.
ooh! i was disappointed to not see my PA favorite - hog maw! (pig stomach)
**long time reader, first time commenter**
Ha Ha Ha this post is funny! Cheese curds are popular here in MN but I am sure not a fan! If you love cheese you will love them! They are good but not GOOD for you! Hot dishes are good. Do you have good recipes for Hot Dishes?!
Harper is so adorable!!
Oh how I love some chocolate gravy! It was fun to see some of those random foods I'd never really heard of! :)
They are serving the Fry Sauce at the Market Place down here in Fort Smith now! And Skyline Chili in Cincinnati is delicious! I recommend a 5 way...
My BIL says scrapple is the most perfect food around. At Christmas, my FIL fries a huge plate and brings it--no matter what meal we are eating. Old Bay is another Maryland favorite to eat on seafood, especially our steamed blue crabs. Yummy!
I've heard of most of these (I've lived in the north and the south)... but have y'all ever heard of a Whoopie Pie?? It's a Maine (and New England) dessert. They're amazing! I grew up on them as a kid in Maine.
my girlfriend introduced me to chocolate gravey. My kids love it. we are moving to sc and will have to check out fry sauce. I am excited to get real soul food. the places here are a joke lol
Evidently, the sweet corn we grow up north (Ohio) is pretty awesome - when my parents come up to visit from OKC, they take a ton back for their friends .....last year, they paid like $50 in shipping so that we could mail some to them!!
{1} - that fry sauce looks & sounds yummy!!
{2} the rest of that stuff i have never heard of!!
{3} tri-tip sounds like it could be good!!
the last picture of harper is ABSOLUTELY PRECIOUS!!
I've only ever had the pierogies and I have heard of Tri-tip but everything else is completely foreign to me. Have you ever had pork roll (Taylor Ham)? As far as I know it is a New Jersey food because all of my friends and family around the country can't get enough of it when they are visiting. If you ever find yourself in NJ you have to try it!
I guess I am a southern girl too because I had never heard of these either!! I was telling my hubby today that I want to try your okra recipe! It looks so yummy!
I am a southern girl, so okra and rotel are things I know well, but I have family up north, and they bring cheese curds down at Christmas time and they are yummy! You can eat them cold, or my uncle warms them in a pot of water, drains, and adds some salt and they're really good! I would much rather have white gravy any day though, which is something they don't really eat up north!
Harper is so cute in these pictures that it makes my heart hurt!! Oh how I could just eat her up (with a side of chocolate gravy)!
I think Harper needs to be a baby model. She takes the BEST pictures. So sweet!!
I grew up in the south and we always eat ketchup and mayo mixed together aka FRY SAUCE on boiled shrimp...it is AWESOME!
