Recession Fashion - Dressing Cute for Less!

I am NO expert on fashion. But a lot of you are always asking me where I get my clothes and because I love to shop cheap.......I was thinking about how times are tough and we are all trying to watch what we spend and we still like cute clothes .......so how are some ways to look cute for less. These are just a few random thoughts. But luckily - I'm going to add a Mr. Linky and I'd love to see all of you do posts on dressing for less and put your link on here so we can all share ideas on where to shop and what to buy!!!
My main fashion plan is to keep my wardrobe doubled by layering. I mostly wear dresses (it's just so easy) - so I like to get sleeveless dresses I can wear in the summer with cute sandals and jewelry and then in the winter - put long sleeved t-shirts under and add tights and boots. It gives me a lot more options. A lot of you asked about maternity clothes. Because the style is empire waist anyway - I wore mostly normal clothes all through my pregnancy - like the dress above. That was summer before I was prego and then winter when I was about to pop. Same dress. (I got it at the gap last year on sale!) (Gap has good sales if you can hang in there).
OH - I need to address the dress/nursing issue. I don't know. Since I can't go anywhere right now - I mostly am wearing jeans and sweats at home. I have a few more weeks before I can figure out how I'm going to handle this issue - you are right - the two do not go together which makes me sad because I like both. :-)

I know ya'll know this - but I'm a big fan of Wal-Mart. I'm telling you they have come a long way. I would have rather DIED a thousand deaths than to have gotten my clothes at WM when I was a teenager but times have changed. How cute is this purple ruffled dress? Purple and ruffles are HOT right now! :-) This is $25. If it's not at your store - just go to www.wal-mart.com.
Another Wal-Mart dress that I'm loving. I think both of these would be cute with big gold jewelry and gold sandals. This is $25 also.
This sweet girl sent me some neat t-shirts while we were in the hospital. One said "Faith" on the front and on the back "what else is there?". I love it - I wear it constantly. I thought this was so cute to wear on the casual days. Check out all the different shirts they have here. (Under $30)
How cute is this dress??? $24.50 at Old Navy and I'm sure if you hold out a little - it will go on sale. This is comfy and cute - I'm thinking for hanging around the house, to a shower, to a BBQ.
I found these sandals at (where else?) Wal-Mart the other night and I couldn't resist. $15!!! So cute!!! These would jazz up any little dress or shorts. (They had them in purple too and I'm so thinking I may need to get them to dresss up black dresses. I mean 2 pairs of sandals for $30 - can't beat that!) (I get a lot of shoes at WM too and they usually end up being my favorites).
The best thing you can do on a budget is just dress up your old clothes with new accessories. I'm a big jewelry girl. It can make a huge difference to what you are wearing. Forever 21 has the cutest jewelry for CHEAP. Yes these aren't peices to last a lifetime but they are great for a season or two. I mean earrings for $5.80.

I've become a HUGE fan of the big cocktail rings (thanks to my SIL, Carrie). They can make an outfit really fun. Look at this one at Forever 21 - $3.80! Seriously - skip a starbucks drink and you've made your outfit! ha!

Another great place for jewelry is Sam Moon. This awesome necklace and earrings - $9.95!!! I've ordered several big chunky necklaces from there and they can take a plain black dress from drab to FAB!!!

Okay - please don't leave me hanging - give us your ideas or cute outfits you have seen for less than $30!! It's almost spring/summer - we need help (FOR LESS!)
(Please only add your link if you are posting about dressing for less!!!!)

Yea! I'm near the top! I love CATO for cheap jewelry, some cute clothes and shoes. They aren't the best quality, but still cute! Also Target (Tar-Jay) has cute jewelry on clearance and cute shoes.

OMG, there is a HUGE Sam Moon that I HAVE to go to EVERY time I go home (Texas, Dallas area!) actually there is more than one now!

My ways of being thrifty is to always go to the Goodwill store. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't go in there picking up all the worn out ratty looking pieces, but I have picked up some WAY COOL pieces of clothing from there! Some have even had the tags on them still!

I also use the layering technique OFTEN! I will find myself even layering OVER a dress with a sweater to make it look like a skirt!

Buy a pair of BIG - CHUNKY - "clip on" earrings... clip them to the top of your pumps.... adds a great new style without having to buy the actual ones MADE for that that cost WAY too much!

I absolutely adore the pants that button at the bottom to make them shorter for capri length... Longer with a pair of Chuck Taylor All Stars (with cute laces, mind you) and shorter with rockin' sandals!

That's enough for me.... Maybe I should do a blog about the same, LOL!!!! Didn't realize I had so many tricks I was using!

You are my fashion role model! I boughtthe cutest skirt and top at WM last week and CATO is now one of my new favs! It's so cheap and they get new stuff on every week.

Get friendly with the sales gals and Nordstrom. They'll call you when the racks get down to 50% off or more. I love brand name goodies so I shop sales, sales, sales.
Other faves:
*Nordstrom Rack
*Lands End Overstock
*Sierra Trading Post
*Aerosoles (they have sales where you can stock up because styles go down to $9.99)

I used to buy all my basic tees at GAP (perfect tee), but not I buy them at Wal Mart, on sale for about $5 each. Saves me a ton of money and no one can tell the difference save for me!

This is so ironic. I have had a post all planned in my head about the dress I just bought on eBay that I LOVE! It is a brown chiffon from J.Crew, originally priced at about $200 and I got it for...$60 on eBay, with FREE SHIPPING! Woo hoo! And, it fits perfectly! I am going to post about it right now! But, thanks for doing this because it has been in my "plan" for the last couple of days!

Hey Kelly...random question. You used to have a link to a blog of a family who did IVF and then had twins a boy and a girl...Hadley and Cooper I think. I glanced at it a few times and there are some great pictures on there. My friend is having twins and our other friend is kind of a photographer and I wanted to show her....Do you know the link? Sorry to inconvience you??? You can connect to my blog and leave it there or e-mail me at kbarnes@cfccmt.org. Thanks in advance!!! Bless your day and thanks for your great blog!

Hi Kelly! I have been reading your blog since Harpe was born but I have never left a comment, but I am all about shopping for cheap! I have found my absolute favorite spring and summer dresses at Ross! I live close to Nashville and I know they are all around TN, but not sure where else - I have to dig an I used to despise going through every piece of clothing on the rack, but it is definitely worth it, I can get 4 or 5 dresses for $50 bucks!!! They are so cute too!! I love sun dresses but not my arms so I get a ton of cardigans at Target or just wear a jean jacket over it and ome cute flipflops and I am out the door! I will comment on my love for Arkansas another time - my mother was born and raised in the Ozarks and it is my second home!

I did my Recession Fashion post a few minutes ago on my blog. I've found myself evolving since having kids. I need comfortable, wash n wear, cheap but still cute and stylish. I also had to learn to be okay with my body. To admire it for creating my children and not try to hide it under oversized clothing. I think I'm finally there. Great post, thanks!

Cute stuff!! One thing I did when I was nursing, was to wear dresses like the purple one you posted - I just wore a camisol under it, then I'd pull the top of the dress down and the bottom of the camisol up and that worked. Babystyle had great nursing apparel, but they're gone waaaah booo hoooo *cry* *cry* *cry*

One of your best points was to skip a Starbuck's drink! At $4 or $5 each once or twice a month, you could buy an outfit on the savings.

I'm a big thrift store girl. People give away clothes with tags still on! You can find some great stuff if you have the time to search.

Also, one of the things that makes you so beautiful is "your head." This always makes my mom and hubby laugh...I'll say "I'm mostly ready; I just have to get my head ready." (meaning makeup and hair)

Anyway, You have gorgeous skin, an incredible smile, joyful eyes, and radiant hair. Sometimes we can look a lot better if we just spend some extra time working on "our heads." :)

Another trick is to wear jeans but buy cute tops. Save $ on cheaper jeans but focus on nicer tops. I'm not a dress fan, but you look great in them!

I hate to be a negative commentator, but I do have just a tiny thought about Wal-mart- they don't really care so much about how they get their product to sell for cheap. While they do offer good deals, it often comes at the expense of inexpensive labor that is questionable. While I don't want to suggest a boycot of Sam, I would just encourage everyone to do a tiny bit of label research before buying. I promise, no judement here, it's just that once you know about it, it leaves a bit of an icky mark over the stores philosophy.

Anywho, I am a huge fan of designer clothes, but don't desire to pay designer prices. I am a HUGE fan of ebay. While I don't really sell on the site, I dress my girls (1 and 5) almost entirely from there and then suplement with stores like Lohman's. Sometimes I buy new but often I buy gently used (an earth friendly option). If you factor in the shipping price when bidding, you can walk away with steals. I swear, my daughters winter coat (I'll post pics when she gets home from school) was under $15 and is adorable (gently used). I also buy stuff for myself there- currently wearing citizen for humanity prego jeans that are regular price $200, at ebay for $80. I wear them almost every day, so while the price might sound high, I am getting my wear out of them. And don't even get me started on accessory steals! i paid 1 cent + shipping for my sunglasses last summer!!!

Happy Shopping! And again, I am not trying to bash wal-mart, but just thought that I'd throw that out there since it has been on my heart since it was shared with me.

Hey Kelly! I love, love, love your blog! I was wondering if you would mind doing me a small favor? (I know you are thinking, oh great! lol).
I am getting together a team to walk for March for Dimes here in Abilene, Texas. Since your blog is so well known I was wondering if you wouldn't mind posting a link to my blog in one of your posts? This would help so much because it would get people reading about a great cause that we are trying to raise money for. I thought this might be something you might be passionate about as well, since Princess Harper had a little trouble at birth. You are the first person I thought of.. "Kelly's Korner can get people to do this!" lol
Sorry my comment is not "recession sales" related but I did LOVE all your great ideas! Thanks for your help. Corrie Loftin @ mommyloftin.blogspot.com

cute outfits!! I need to check out WM's clothes more often!! I worked at F21 a few months after college before moving and stocked up on dresses then! A LOT of them...I'm still wearing over 2 years later..key to make them last longer = hang to dry :)

I've heard a lot of talk lately about "recession fashion". Yesterday on the radio, there was a lady talking about having a clothes swapping party with friends. Someone hosts at their house and everyone brings clothes, shoes, etc that they are tired of wearing and swap around - that way you get new outfits for $0. Sounded kind of neat - as long as your friends are around the same size in clothing?

I haven't commented in awhile but love coming and seeing new pictures of Harper. She is so precious!

I loved your post about dressing for less...last night I went to this Economical Entertaining class and got this recipe. It was DELICIOUS and so easy to make!! Try it and let me know what you think!! It looks really elegant too!

Parmesan Puffs
1 loaf thin white bread
1 cup mayonnaise
1 cup Parmesan Cheese, grated (use the real stuff)
1 medium onion, sliced in small pieces, placed in water to soak

Pre-heat oven to 400. Using a round biscuit cutter, cut out 30 rounds of bread. (She used small egg shaped cutters, so she got two out of each piece of bread). Mix mayonnaise and parmesan. Spread each round with mayo mixture. Place a small piece of onion on top. Bake in oven for 10 minutes or until beginning to brown. Serve hot.

Thank you Kelly! It really is amazing, she should not be this healthy with her condition, she should not have made it this far without surgery either.. but the defect is there so we still have to have surgery for her to survive. Such a miracle.. GOD IS SO GOOD! Her surgery is scheduled for May 20.

PS.. I love those dresses you have posted. The one from Old Navy I think.. VERY CUTE!! Great advice!!

I love to wear dresses too but our local Walmart stores do not seem to have the cute dresses I see you wear. I guess I need to look online.

I so enjoyed this post. Your shopping habits and mine are awfully similar. I love Wal-Mart dresses (only our store never carries the cute ones, so I always have to go online) and Old Navy and Sam Moon. I like to keep the things I'm looking at in GAP and Old Navy in an online shopping cart, and I check it every so often...so if something's on sale, I can go ahead and order it.

Kelly! I have to say, I am just like you! All winter I have added shirts that I already had (while being pregnant) with a long sleeve T underneath and added a cute scarf or jacket. It's not about "what you wear" it's HOW you wear it! I love to pair a cute pair of jeans (maybe sevens or something) with a cheap WMT top and fun funky jewls from Forever 21. Forever 21 is my FAV and I usually shop in their for hours for something to cover this belly... but when I do shop- think season, think advance! Something I can wear maybe now for winter, and again for spring/summer! Fun post! Love it! Hope all is well! ;) By the way, it's time to go shopping!!!!! Lets do it!

Hey! I read your blog often, but do not comment a lot. I just wanted to let you know I found a way around the dress/nursing issue. If you get v-neck or wrap dresses, you can wear a nursing tank underneath them, and then all you have to do is pull the flap of the dress over, undo the tank, and voila! nursing. Just a suggestion.

I'm not sure if you have time to read all of your comments, but my first exposure to 'blogland' was the day after Harper was born. I 'accidentally' found your site while trying to find a blog about decorating your house on a shoestring budget. I stopped to read your blog, and, as many others did, I contacted two email prayer chains to pray. I was so inspired by YOUR blog, that I started my own blog to share tips about mothering and women making a difference. I admire you for how well you handled a tremendously difficult situation with thousands of 'new' friends. Thank you! My blog is Letsmakeadifference09.blogspot.com

This post is such a great idea. Unfortunately I am not one of the people who will be able to leave any suggestions. I'm the one who needs the fashion advice, LOL! I am always looking for good deals so this should be fun to see what everyone has to say. I actually read this post earlier today, and didn't leave a comment and then noticed you added that part about nursing...I was kinda wondering about that. I would love to try some dresses, especially since I'm getting back into church. Don't know how much longer I'll be nursing now that Audrey's one. Also love your ideas for jewelry too!

And yardsales sometimes have cute clothes too! You just have to think outside the box-- which you obviously already figured out!

Cute, cute! I think I need to go hit up my WalMart and see what's new there!

I don't shop at Wal-Mart but I do love Target and Old Navy. And Old Navy has tons of cute shoes and sundresses right now.

I didn't think about Forever 21 for accessories (I don't usually go in there since the clothes don't really fit me!). Great tip, thanks! : )

I have been noticing Walmart is moving up in the world of fashion! I love TJ Maxx and Ross as well. The closest Forever 21 to me is over an hour away :( Thanks for the tips!!

Kelly, I was just in my Wal-Mart today and I came across (AND BOUGHT) a stinking cute summer dress there. It is by Faded Glory and the top looks like a short sleeved peasant top (gathering around the arms and smocking around the bust) and it comes down right past the knee on me. It is made of a super soft knit. The colors it comes in are black, red, black and white floral, and red and white floral. I got the black and white floral and I plan on wearing it with yellow accessories and sandals! The cost was 14 dollars. The fit of it is really cute!!! I want to go back and get another one!!! I checked the website but it isn't listed yet! You should check it out - I think you'd love it!!!

Just a little help on the nursing issue, if you go out wearing a dress then your best option is a wrap type dress. That is about the only kind of dress I wore for a while after my kids were born.

And since I love shopping I need to find a way to do it for less!!

P.S. Glad that little princess of yours is doing so great! She is truly a little angel!!

I posted a bunch of really helpful tips on dressing your kids from consignment and ebay. I usually pay less than 10% of retail for my daughter's clothing but never compromise. She wears only the best- but for less!

Great, very practical and fun post! You would make Stacy and Clinton proud ;-)

I love TJMaxx and Marshalls, and consignment stores. Not sure if our Walmart has the cute things you showed but I'll be looking. I want a couple of cute dresses for everyday this year. Forever 21 is the bomb! Went to their Chicago store last summer and was overwhelmed with joy.

So, I was in WalMart today and I thought about you! I remember a while back, I read a post about you finding great "finds" at WalMart. When I was a teenager and my mother wanted me to buy my jeans at WalMart, I died! It was horrible! I obviously survived, but have never forgotten! But today, I stopped and looked and there are some REALLY cute dresses! Can't wait to go back and purchase a few when I'm kiddo free!

Cute post, as always!

Hi Kelly!
I didn't read all of the comments, so I'm not sure if any mentioned this.... There are some great stores on the net with nursing clothes and dresses. They look like regular clothes, but allow you to nurse or pump easily and discreetly. Check out expressiva.com , motherwear.com , and mommygear.com . Motherhood maternity also sells nursing tops, but their quality isn't that great and they don't have dresses.

King J's Queen said...

Hi Kelly!

I did the Mr. Linky thing, so I hoped it worked right.

Having been a nursing mom, I can share what worked for me. Obviously, long dresses with no openings at the top don't work particularly well. However, wrap dresses with a splice front are perfect. A word of caution, though. Between feedings, be sure to PIN the splice closed. Little babies know where their food comes from and and will not hesitate to dive right in at really inopportune moments. LOL!

Tops with skirts work well, too. Jumpers with buttons or clips at the top are handy. Of course, any dress that opens in the front will work well. Those that open in the back also will work if you have some privacy. You can either drop the top, or spin it around while nursing.

If you are stuck wearing a full length dress, bring along a wrap to cover your legs (for warmth as much as modesty), then hike it up and nurse away.

It won't be long until the weather is warm enough for lighter weight materials, and those are easier to work with than the bulkier winter weights.

Take care!

Wanted to leave you a comment on nursing and dresses. I LOVE wearing dresses and was determined to figure out how to keep wearing them while I was nursing. Rule number one is the hooter hider! Great invention to help cover you up. Second, is to always wear a camisole/spaghetti strap top under everything even t-shirts when you go out. I can wear pretty much anything becuase you can left up your main shirt and then just pull the camisole down to expose one breast. Also, look for dresses that might be a little more lower cut than you are used to but with the camisole it works out. Finally, skirts are just as fun and work well when nursing! Good luck and I love your tips!

You might check out http://www.expressiva.com/store/Dresses-p-1-c-1.html for some nursing dresses. THey aren't exactly Wal-Mart pricing, but they are great- and if you get 1 or 2 for church and special occasions, it might help you feeling girly this summer! If you nurse long enough, it's more than worth the money- to feel good and be covered. I got 1 or 2 tops from them and loved them!

Love your site. I got hooked on it the day before you had Harper- got your site from a facebook page- I think, really cannot remember. Honestly, I have never had the desire to be a blogger but after reading one post of yours- I was hooked. I tell people about you in my home town (Scottsboro, Alabama) all the time b/c I KNOW if you lived here- we would DEFINITELY be friends. Ha! I have already made several of your recipes too. I truely believe that God put you in my path b/c I had been struggle with starting a blog/site for our home town. For years, I have been the one people send prayer requests, forwarded emails for people in need (I am a big charity girl)and basically anthing else happening in our town. I had thought about starting a blog so people could just coem to me rather than me sending out over 1000 emails (litterally) everytime someone sent me an email. You were my inspiration that this could happen and is actually going great. I have been overwelmed with the response that people have had. I have a recipes category on my site and have several of your recipes on their too. I have many more to posts but try to update a couple of times a week so please check out my site if you have time. pennyspurse.com
Thanks again for being my sign from God that this was something that could not only be dream turn reality but a gift from me to our community with sharing what I know.
Thanks and your Harper and your entire family are fabulous!!

Hi Kelly!

I am new to the blogging world and was prompted to start one when several friends I've re-connected with on facebook asked if I'd had one. Well, long story short, I got your page from Mackenzie Turrill. And, I noticed that you said something about OBU on your page. Did you go to OBU? We live in Shawnee, although I'm a transplant, my husband grew up in the area. Anyway, I just thought I'd tell you what a great blog you have and I hope that it brings you joy to know that this many people enjoy what you say and do!

Sending many blessings from our family to yours!

I love love love that you posted this blog the day after I dug through the racks at Ross for 45 minutes before triumphantly emerging with 2 cocktail dresses for under $15 each. I'm one of those people who has a really hard time buying anything for full price. Almost everything I own came from Walmart, the clearance racks at Target or Kohl's, and Ross. I mean, I bought my wedding dress on clearance ($212 at Jessica McClintock!!) If you have the patience to dig through those racks, the deals make it so worth it! The way I see it, if you got it at a discounted price, you're not as upset if something happens to it.

And for jewelry... bidz.com. It's an auction site, but you can get really nice jewelry for a fraction of the value!

Hey Kelly! Have you heard the term recessionista? That is what I consider my self, still trying to remain fashinable on a tight bugget! Totally possible! I wore the purple dress, in black, on Sunday. I love it, and it was on sale at my Wal-mart for $13.00!!! And you can nurse in it! Just look for things that are wrap or cross over or low V and add a cami.

okay, i am going to give away my secret! I go to the main Goodwill in Tulsa, not for the used clothes but the ones that Target donates to Goodwill that are brand new with the tags on them! I got an adorable little brown dress with black monogram on it yesterday for $5.99 and it is from Target (Merona) and had the original tag from Target on it for $24.99!! Shh, don't tell too many people!!

Hey hope you watched Good Morning America, your post about Recession Fashion was a day early. They talked about mixing outfits to make many different ones, the cutest what adding a belt to a plain dress and it became an empire waist dress and then added a cardigan to it, too cute!

My post yesterday was about shopping for little ones. When you're on a budget, you have to find good deals on kid's clothes! My favorite places for good deals on kid's clothes are Walmart, Target, Kohl's, and Children's Place. And the clothes are always cute!!! Who needs to spend $25 on an Easter dress when you have TWO daughters?

mn said...

Thanks for the fun post and for sharing your ideas.
My best tip is that I check ebay for absolutely everything clothing-related before I buy it in a store, because I so often find what I'm looking for there, usually at a much lower price.
Also, I love like vintage/funky style and want a nice change from the Old Navy & Target staples, take a look at this French girl's cute blog:
http://www.thecherryblossomgirl.com/
She is more creative than I am with my clothes, but I like getting ideas about different ways to style things I have.

PS. Are you going back to work?

Great suggestions, Kelly! Walmart has tons of cute vneck solids right now that are $5 and cute, cute scarves that are $5 as well. I have been wearing tons of those with nursing tanks under them because it makes nursing so easy, plus you still look cute! It's lots of fun to mix and match those scarves with shirts.

I love F21 also! I got a ton there the other day and spent $50!

I am no fashion expert either but here are some of my suggestions for "recession fashion". . .

1) Express ALWAYS has GREAT sales...it is my "go to" store for cute and affordable!!!

2) Buy simple/classic pieces that will translate easily from season to season and that are ALWAYS in style.

3) Borrow/Share...I am not talking about borrowing your neighbors cardigan to wear to work or church BUT let's say you have a FANCY wedding to go to this summer and you just don't have the right dress or you have already wore your "fancy party dress" to another friend's wedding and don't want to fashion double dip...well call up that always chic well-dressed FRIEND and ask for a loan for the night/weekend and BE SURE to have it dry-cleaned before returning it...

Well that is all I've got for now!!

Katy said...

I will try to link up later b/c I'm all about turning inexpensive things into Hot and Sassy!!

But let me tell you something>>>
IF you don't have one yet...YOU MUST go to Target and get their nursing tank tops. I wore them seriously everyday (under something) for a whole year, while I was nursing. They are SO easy and I stuck them under tanks, tees, whatever. Then when you pull down the thing for baby to eat, your ENTIRE tummy doesn't show. I'm not in to showing the world my stomach while I breastfeed. I had a white one and a gray one. I aslo used the Hooter Hider nursing cover ...it is also wonderous!!!

Have a great day!! -Katy

My name is Becky Buxton and I live in Auburn, AL. I was referred to your blog for prayers when Harper was born, and I am now addicted. I have been so invested in Harper's recovery and I think part of the reason is that she looks so much like my 7 month old did when she was born! I am so thankful that Harper is doing so well.

As for the dress/nurse issue...I too wear dresses everyday and I have found that a wrap dress, or a dress with a loose neckline, is far easier to nurse in than anything else. All you do is pull one side down - which can actually be done in a very discreet manner.

Good luck! We will keep Harper and your family in our prayers.

Warm Regards,
Becky

I'm a big fan of trying to make things myself. Now, I have yet to make myself something, but I've created several boutique-style dresses for my daughter. I do like to make my own jewelry as well--nothing too fancy and Hobby Lobby has a great beading aisle with lots of great ideas.

When shopping online, I search for online coupons before I even go to the site.

Oh, I'm a big fan of Wal-Mart clothes, too. :)

that purple dress you posted about and any made like that are GREAT for nursing- as long as it has a criss cross kind of front, it is the easiest thing ever to nurse in!
