Cover Girl

Harper and I have something exciting to share with you today!

A couple of weeks ago - someone from the Arkansas Baptist State News Magazine e-mailed me and said they would like to do a feature article on our story. It came out today and look who is on the cover!
All of you who prayed for us are included in this story so you have to go read about it here!!!
I thought they did a great job telling our story - it made me cry to go back and re-visit it all!

Harper is crying for two reasons today:

1. It's Fat Tuesday (mardi gras) and she thinks someone is making fun of her weight ha!

2. She has had beautiful skin until this weekend and now her little face is all red and broken out. I know it's normal to get baby acne but hers is pretty bad. Does anyone have anything that helps that??? Bless her heart.

What an amazing blessing. God keeps using little Harper, doesn't He? He is good and I look forward to seeing how He continues to use her precious little life.

What a precious cover picture! Harper is such a little show girl, I love it! You guys make really cute babies. :)

I hope her little cheeks are just bothering you more than it bothers her. That's usually the case with us moms. We go to a dermatologist (adult and pediatric) for my daughter in BV. His name is Summerlin if you ever need to go for Harper. I have to say, his suggestions have always worked way better than what the doctor told us when it came to her skin.

He suggests using Cetaphil (yes, the women's facial cleanser) for all newborns and any sensitive skin/eczema. The "Gentle Skin Cleanser" is the best. There's no oil or soap in it, but it does cleanse. You wash with it, dry the area, and then re-apply without washing off (as if it were a lotion). Apparently it bonds with the moisture molecules and, you know...performs some miracle. Worked great for both my babies!

It brings me such joy to see Harper so healthy! (Not fat!) :)

Got Harper's birth announcement today! Very classy! I just love that linen paper. : ) Thakns for thinking of us. Bichon thinks Dawson is a stud muffin, and now Harbor is thinking Harper might be his future girlfriend. But, could we say Harper and Harbor 10 times fast? Ha!

I was told by a nurse to use Eucerin lotion on Harbor's face. We bought it at Walmart. It is a little pricey, but his face cleared up!

WARM WATER, sometimes soap too.

My little man had it too and I was afraid if I washed it too much, it would dry out. So I hardly washed it at all.

My mother's cleaning lady saw him one day and said, "ooooh, Leah. His face is sooo dirty!". I was so embarrassed. She told me to wash it with a warm, soft wash cloth a few times a day. I did and it went away within 24 hours.

She is sooo cute! Makes me want another baby girl so badly. :)

She is soo beautiful!

I use pure lanolin on my daughters face to this day! It was the only thing that cleared her skin up when she was an infant! Now when she gets a rash I put that on it and it is gone with in 2 days usually!

Also bathing her in Aveeno baby wash will help!

Oh my goodness...what a cutie!!! I was so excited to see today's post. Thanks again for sending so many wonderful people my way. You have blessed me so much, I can't even tell you. Thank you, thank you!!!

Ahhh, that is a beautiful photo on the cover - your sweet daughter is quite a looker.

As far as her skin, I would recommend gently washing it with Weleda Baby (http://www.weledababy.com/)and then taking her outside in shaded sun for a few minutes to get some air and help heal her skin. Trust me on this. . .

You and your family have a lovely evening.

My kiddo had what I thought was baby acne, but it turned out to be a pretty severe case of eczema. I think I would ask Harper's doctor before I tried anything too out of the ordinary... although I don't think gentle soaps and warm washes could hurt anything! =)

She is so pretty... and I'm sorry, but I LOVE the picture where she's crying!! I did NOT love that crying when it was MY kiddo who was the newborn, but now it's flippin' adorable. :)

i see you have a lot of advice about the baby acne and i didn't take the time to read through all of it, so i don't know if this was suggested, but when my son got baby acne (exact same age as harper)i read just to leave it and it would go away on its own.
about a week later, he got a bad cold and we bought a humidifier and up it in his room, literally, overnight his face cleared up almost completely. within 2 days all the baby acne was gone. i think his skin was so dry (we live in the middle east in a VERY dry climate with no humidity)
so, that's always something you can try as well. if you don't have a humidifier, it's a wonderful investment, especially for the winter months. whenever he has a cold, we run it in his room during his naps and overnight. makes a HUGE difference.

Are you still breast feeding?? I know you are probably using wonderful products on her skin... but are you on yours??

I work for a "safe cosmetics" company and I am an advocate of only using green products on our little babies skin.

I use ONLY burts bees on Carsyn and myself now. I use her "no tear wash and shampoo" for my body wash as well. Think how much her face is coming into contact with your skin... Anyways Carsyn's face broke out one time and it was because I used some cheap-o dove.

Just a tip :) and I love that crying face. So precious... I love to kiss Carsyn's face when she is crying like that... makes her so mad ;)

So wonderful to see your miracle recapped like that. A reminder of how good God was, is, and will always be!

Do not use soap on the baby's face! It is too harsh! Please do not use Dial like someone suggested! Most recommended if you breastfeed is to express some breastmilk and rub into baby acne spots and let dry on its own. If no breastmilk, just use warm water on washcloth and wipe gently and let air dry. No soap or lotions! Babies get breakouts, its your hormones in their system working their way out.

We have a special soap, Cetaphil, that can be used for babies. We used it twice a day with warm water to clean Gabriella's face. It worked well!

My baby didn't have acne, but I have heard of some people using breast milk.

Can I just say I love this blog? People read it because they want to hear what is going on in your sweet family, not because they are trying to win a giveaway, etc. I love how God sent tons of people here to pray for Harper and no other reason. I am feeling a little dismayed by some in the blogging world who seem to write as if the world revolves around them and are enjoying the "fame" a little too much for my taste. I feel like I am being suckered into an ad or something. So don't ever change...I love reading. (No pressure-ha!)

I think the bow is giving her a headache! Just kidding. God really is awesome. All one has to do is look at Harper to know this! I know God will continue to bless you and your family.

If you get Avent products in the States - their "Magic Cream" is great for baby acne (milk spots) - it worked like a dream on my son.

My sweet baby had baby acne horribly as well. I was petrified. Does Harper have some flaky patches on her scalp as well? Our doctor associated the two and said that as soon as we got the flaky scalp under control, the acne would clear up. Whattaya know, it worked! He had us putting baby oil on her scalp at the beginning of her bath, bathe the rest of the body as usual, and then wash the baby oil off her head at the end of the bath with Johnson's baby shampoo (because it has some extra moisturizing agents in it). You can use a brush too to get some of the flakes off. He said that in the meantime with her face, to just leave it alone and not try putting too many other products on because it can irritate things further. My daughter had it really bad for about two weeks and then it never came back. Good luck! Harper is one sweet baby, acne or not!!! :)

I'm SURE one of the previous commentors mentioned this already...but Aquaphor worked on my daughter's face. It comes in various sizes - we bought the smaller tube and it lasted a LONG time - and is available at our Walmart and Target. Now my little girl is 2 and I still use it on her dry/red/irritated skin spots. What a dollie you have!

Kelly,
What a story, Harper is a true miracle. I have such respect for you and your love of God. I truly understand all the feeling that you had in the NICU. I am a MOM of twins that were born eary (9 weeks)and my son has a serious heart condition. We spent 128 days in the NICU and I felt truly blessed to have all our family and friend praying for us. We received such great care and comfort during our NICU stay I like you don't think I could ever not think of giving back.
You are a true inspiration to us all and please keep praying for all the sweet babies in the NICU's around the world.
God Bless you and your family, you have a beautiful sweet baby to prove God's true testimate.

Hi there, I have been following your story and praying for all of you. Harper is such a beautiful blessing.

Both of my girls had baby acne right at a month old. It's from your hormones that are working their way out of her little system. (It's hormones from when she was inside of you, not from breastfeeding.) It looks horrendous but goes away after about 10-14 days max. It doesn't hurt them. All I did was dab a little breastmilk on it! I didn't know what else to do! LOL I don't recommend using soap on newborn skin, it is so drying. God Bless!

I love those adorable pictures! My recommendation for her skin is to simply sponge her face with warm water. It will go away super fast. Avery had milia on her nose. NEVER put lotion on her face. Parents feel a need to put lotion on babies but don't do it. Babies typically don't need lotion. It simply causes baby acne and I will spare you on all the chemicals in 90% of the lotions out there and what they do. I promise, it will go away. I know it is tough not to mess with it...believe me. I'm the most impatient person ever. I mean to fix my face I did a chemical peel and microdermabrasion in one day. Ha! Not smart but oh well. I want results fast.

HEY KELLY...OUR LIL' INFANT HAD VERY BAD BABY ACNE..AND I WAS STRESSED BC WE HAD SOME UPCOMING PICTURES AND OUR DOCOTOR TOLD US TO GET THIS HYDRO-CORTIZONE MEDICINE..FROM WALMART..WE HAD TO GET IT IN THE PHARMACY SECTION BC FOR SOME REASON THEY KEEP IT BEHIND THE COUNTER..IT WAS AROUND $1 SOMETHING...AND IS THE .05 STRENGTH I BELIEVE..VERY MILD..BUT IN LESS THAN A WEEK THE BUMPS WERE ALMOST GONE..I WILL FIND OUT THE CORRECT DOSAGE WHEN I GET HOME AND LOOK ON MY TUBE BUT I WOULD DEF. TRY IT..I WILL COMMENT YOU BACK AS SOON AS I SEE FOR SURE WHAT DOSAGE IT WAS..

Hey, Kelly. I'm so glad that little Harper is settling into life quite normally after her hard start! My little Mason got something on his face about a month after birth too. I thought it was acne, but off-handedly mentioned it as a side note to the nurse at his doctors appointment and the doctor came to look at it. He called it seborrheic dermatitis, gave me a hydrocortizone creme and within 2 days, it was completely gone. So, you might ask the doctor about it at your appointment and see if perhaps it's not baby acne afterall!

I have read your blog since the birth of Harper. I have prayed so hard for her and your entire family.
I run a retirement community in Bryant, AR, and was walking through the lobby today and saw one of my residents reading the AB newsletter. I saw Harper's picture and said "I know that baby!" A little while later, the sweet lady came to my office and said "Leslie, what's a BLOGGER?" I loved it!

wow! she's famous!! i know she will probably never need another bow in her life, but i'm here in bentonvile & you can see examples on my blog. i would love to make you some if she ever has a special outfit that you need to have one made!! let me know!

You've probably gotten tons of advice/suggestions for Harper's baby acne. Mine may sound strange, but it worked for us! Whenever I nursed my son, I would hand-express a little milk and rub it on the acne. I know it sounds weird, but I'm telling you, breast milk is GOOD stuff! It cleared his up very quickly. :)

This is so normal and a short lived phase. It will be over before you know it. I wonder how many products people try just seem to help as it would be clearing up on its own about the same time anyway. I know it can look real bad but it goes away. I have four kids so I know how it goes!
