Baby Brain

I've been trying to convince Scott that I have a bad case of "pregnancy brain" and he doesn't believe that it something real. It's either that or I am in early stages of alzhiemer's. I'm seriously losing my mind these days. He had some clothes that needed to go to the cleaners and every day for about 3 weeks he would ask me if I could take them and every day I would say "sure" and every day I would forget. Well - I finally got them there and for about the last 10 days - I can NOT remember to pick them up. I write it down at work "Pick up dry cleaning" and in a notepad I keep in my car - and somehow it's not working.

Last night, Jenna and I decided to go out to eat while the boys were at the football party. My baby brain switch was really on fire last night. We went to Chili's for dinner and then decided to go to Starbucks. I get up to pay at Starbucks and realize I have no debit card. BECAUSE I left it at Chili's. So we have to go back and get it. Then Jenna takes me home and I realize I can't get in my house because I left my car keys in my car (in the garage) and didn't grab the garage door opener. So we had to go to Jenna's house and wait for the boys to get done. It was way past these pregnant girls' bed times and we were both tired. Then when Scott and I got home - I realized I left my leftovers at Jenna's house. (Which Jenna if you read this - eat them or throw them out.)

Did ya'll go this crazy when you were pregnant? I heard it never ends from here. This is not good.

I'm been a little crazy for a while. Like the time a few years ago when we had a HUGE game coming up between AR and Tennessee - we were both in the top 10 and College Game Day was coming and we were the feature game on ESPN that Saturday night and I went to pull out our tickets and realized that I had cleaned out my desk the week before and THROWN THE TICKETS OUT. Thank goodness my friend Hillary's dad came to the rescue with a couple of extra tickets because if I had missed that game - I would have been SICK. Probably for the rest of my life.
P.S. We beat the Volunteers!!!!
P.P.S. Scott's in charge of our tickets now.

Have a good THREE day weekend!

GO HOGS - Beat Western Illinois!

Too funny....and sorry to be a harbinger of bad news, but it IS definitely downhill from here, well into Harper's first year! Hang in there!

Yes, yes and yes-yes! The brains cells disappear day-by-day. And just wait until you push little Harper out...wait until you (and Hubs) realize just how much grey matter went with her. It's science, you know. And here's the worst part...the cells don't regenerate. They are gone forever!

Oh Kelly! It doesn't get any better. I've been a COMPLETE idiot the past 9 months! Luckily I work with all women and they understand. Since being preg, I've locked myself out of my house twice. One time I had to sneak into a movie theater where Brian was with his friends and get the keys!

I remember feeling utterly stupid when I was pregnant w/ my first one! And afterwards for awhile too (i blamed in on sleep deprievation!). I actually remember when he was about 1 I started feeling "smart" again! I started having my memory back and feeling more confident again. I would actually say to my husband in an excited tone "i'm smart again!" he thought i was a nut, b/c like your husband, he never thought pregnancy brain was real!

Oh...my heart fell to my stomach when I read the part about the AR/TN game and no tickets! I was freaking out for you! I'm soooo glad it worked out!!! I keep thinking I'm going to do something like that this season...or just not bring them with us since we're coming from LR. I have tomorrow's tickets for sure. It's the rest of the season I'm concerned about!

I have no experience with a "pregnancy brain" but I do know that once a newborn joins the family...YOU LOSE YOUR MIND!!! It seems like those first weeks after D was placed with us I was unable to think clearly and my brain was foggy. Sleep deprivation does strange things!!!...but the good thing is God created our bodies to adjust and pure adrenaline keeps you going those first few weeks/months.

Have a great weekend!

I know I was pretty crazy while I was pregnant, but it got worse after Brady was born. One night we accidentally put two diapers on him!

I thought "pregnancy brain" was all in my head until I read an article about it. I had it throughout my pregnancy and then it turned to "baby brain". Now, I Have a two year old and I call it "toddler brain" and often think my brain has turned to Jell-o since having a child. The best is yet to come!!

I had a bad case of Pregnancy Brain and it does not go away after the baby is born. I think after the baby arrives it gets worse because you are adjusting to getting less sleep than before. I have to write EVERYTHING down or else I will forget it. I used to have a really good memory, but now it is not so hot. I think it is all caused because my new focus is on Carter and what he needs, not on me. I would not trade it for the world though!

Glad you were able to go to that game! That sounds like something I would do...I will pay extra close attention to my tickets!

Hi! I discovered your blog about a week ago and wanted to let you know how much I've enjoyed reading your posts. You've really inspired me and your unwavering faith in God has made me realize that my relationship with Him needs to become my top priority. Thank you!

I totally understand the pregnancy brain. I'm almost 33 weeks and let me tell ya....it gets worse! I forget everything, and sometimes it can be really embarrassing!

Jennifer said...

Oh my gosh, I can totally relate. LOL

Once I was driving to work the same way that I had for nearly 9 years and all of a sudden I had to pull off the side of the road because I couldn't remember how to get there! Ack! I had to call Craig and ask him and he was laughing. But I was just about in tears. I couldn't even recognize where I was! That was scary!

Julia said...

Oh girl I hear you on that! You know my stories...they just get worse! Have a good weekend and I'll let you know what happens today.

Kelly,

This is only the begining. I even heard on the radio the other day that there is something called Momnesia. Not to worry it's not anything serious it just happens. My kids find it very entertaining when I forget things and flipout (in a funny way).

This last pregnancy I lost my cell phone about 12,298 times! The last time I lost it, I found it in the fridge beside the cookie dough! Imagine that!

Oh yes it's real! I remember sitting at my desk at the firm and finding a mistake and thinking THERE IS NO WAY I'D EVER DO SUCH A THING AS THAT! And I totally had. But I DO think it goes away after you have your baby... you're just so tired you still will do silly and forgetful things!

Like all the ladies before me said, "pregnancy brain" is real but now I call it "mom brain". Pregnancy sucks out all of your brain cells and apparently they don't ever grow back! :) My kids are now 12, 9, 6, & 3and I'm still a mess but have just decided to enjoy my nutso state of mind!

BTW I LOVE your baby bedding!!!

The Garners said...

Yes, it's true--the brain cells disappear at a rapid pace from here on out. I've always done dumb things, but it's gotten a LOT worse in the last 5 years. My life is pretty much like you just described--the keys, the card, the leftovers, etc., only I have two kids in tow as I do all this crazy stuff, which makes it even more adventurous!

Kelli said...

I can't remember if I have commented yet but I have been reading your blog for a while! What a sweet blessing Harper is!! You are GOING TO LOVE being a mommy to a little girl! :)

I had what I called the pregnancy stupids. NUMEROUS times I left my keys in stores and would get out to the car and have to backtrack. They were always in the MOST bizarre places.... unfortunately it hasn't gotten any better since the baby! :)

Um, hello, I'm Lindsey and I have MOMNESIA. Oh yes I do! I'm sorry to tell you, but it only gets worse.

Read this old post:

Speaking of baby brain AND tickets... When I was pregnant we went to an AR football game. I was, ofcourse, wearing the most uncomfortable of shoes... we trekked to the stadium... and I FORGOT THE TICKETS in the car! Poor Seth had to go all the way back to the car and get them. The usher was nice enough to let me sit in his chair while I waited. I just knew my child would be born in Reynolds Stadium... Wouldn't that have been FUN?! ;)

And yes, I must say... It doesn't get much better. The other day I was going to Sonic on Walton... and pulled off at the Arvest. I pulled up to the thing and they asked "how may I help you?" I said, "Oh my gosh, I completely did not mean to come here." She laughed and I then called the psychiatric ward to admit myself. HA!

I had pregnancy brain and then I hate to say it but it got worse after I had the baby. It's getting a little better these days. It is totally not a made up thing!

Girls...Girls...Girls...There is no such thing as pregnancy brain!
I have all the symptoms too and I certainly am NOT pregnant!!

Here's the deal: You have too much on your plate..too many things going...too many "dates" and numbers(debit pin number, social security, phone numbers, etc!) to remember...too many gadgets to remember to take with you when you leave the house(car keys, cell phone, garage door opener, etc.), too many people on your blog list, remembering to twitter, etc. The list goes on and on.

In other words...TOO MUCH!

Everyone is in the same boat with the same 24 hours per day. Don't fret....you will be fine. End of sermon! Thank you very much!

Girl, my mind left 5 1/2 years ago when I was pregnant with my first on and my 2nd and last one is almost 3 and my mind is still gone. Jim gets kind of frustrated because I can't remember to do things he's asked me to do...we've had the dry-cleaning issue. It's frustrating, but I think it's just part of becoming a mommy. Maybe so that you don't remember the hard times about being a new mom. I don't know.

I'm sorry to say - it doesn't get any better. After 3, my poor brain has completely had it! My life is a circus and definitely nuts at times, but I wouldn't have it any other way!

Have a great weekend!

These comments are all so funny. Let me just add to the list that say "Yes, it is a TRUE condition!" Either that or we're just all nuts. :)

I'll give you 2 examples of some of mine from my 1st pregnancy.

1) I was pulled up at a gas station to get gas. I should mention I always pay at the pump. I ppened the gas tank door, took off the cap and proceeded to try to jam my credit card in the gas tank. Not just once, but about 15 times. I got so angry that my perfectly normal sized credit card was NOT fitting. Why would they make an opening that didn't fit?!?! I was about to ask someone for help when I realized that's where the gas nozzle goes and not my credit card. Several people say this moment and yes, I wanted to crawl in a hole and die.

2) I had to leave work for a prenatal appointment (with Dr Seale!) and I was a little early so I stopped by PetSmart for some dog bones. I got carried away playing with some puppies and forgot all about my appointment. At one point I looked at my watch, saw that I should be at work and was so confused why I wasn't. I didn't know whether I needed to go back or just go home and call it a day. Thank goodness I had a cell phone and realized I needed to go to Parkhill ASAP when I received a very frantic phone call from my hubby.

Hope those made you feel a little bit better about your recent mishaps. :)

This comment is for Scott!! Pregnancy brain IS REAL!!!!! I'm not sure why but it really does effect a womans memory when they have a little one inside them. Take it from me I have 4 little rugrats running around.

Now as for the never getting better. You don't ever return to where you were but you don't stay as bad as you are. (If that makes since). Seriously go get a puzzle book. Challenge you mind! It really does help!!!

By the way I love reading your blog! You are so sweet and too cute about your excitement! Thank you!

it's not really pregnancy brain - it's parenthood brain. it will hit dear hubby soon too. the bad news, it doesn't go away at the end of the pregnancy, the good news is once that beautiful, precious little bundle of God's miracle arrives neither of you will care anymore!

My children are six and five and I am still waiting for it to come back! The night we realized I could possibly be pregnant was when we went out to dinner and as we came back out of the restaurant my car door was open. So, I apparently after twenty eight years forgot you had shut the door once you got out! It will get a little better but don't expect your full short term memory to be back for quite a while! :) Have a good weekend, too!

When I was pregnant, I was so bad that my husband went online to research it. He found a couple articles about how the baby actual does take some of the mom's DHA. Granted you have to be careful with the "internet doctor".

I agree with your mom, we as mom/women just have a lot going on!

I still have what I call ding-dong mommy days!

I'm very sorry to say that your memory will never be the same again! That's the reason for the title of my blog!

I had a similar mommy brain moment this week. On the list was eggs. I walked over to get eggs, got distracted by the milk, and never saw the eggs on the list for the rest of the store. Then I got home and remembered eggs. UGH! If only it wasn't like this all the time!

Sadly, it doesn't get any better, Kelly. I still have it and my kids are teenagers!! Now I'm starting to think it really could be alzheimers!! :( It's scary!

Jennifer said...

I can't even remember what all I forgot! Haha! Makes total sense doesn't it? I really do think it has gotten better towards the end of my pregnancy. It's probably just a tease and now I am going to forget things all over again once Brody gets here.

Google search "momnesia". No joke, it's an actual thing caused by pregnancy and postpartum hormones! It will make you feel so much better about losing your mind!! :)

Katie said...

Haha! Funny post! I know how it feels, as I'm sure every other mother does. Just wait, Kelly...it doesn't really get any better...because once you actually HAVE the baby, your mind will be completely and continually "preoccupied" all the time with thinking about the baby, what's the baby doing, how will what I'm doing right now affect the baby...even if it's something stupid like...should I wear black or brown today? It's weird, Kelly, it is! Have a good weekend, too!

I know all about the pregnancy "stupids" as my friend Gloria and I call it. I used to be so forgetful about many things when I was pregnant. Gloria used to make fun of me all the time. But now she is pregnant and can't find things like her wallet, when they are in her hand. It will pass, I promise.

Kelly i found your blog about two weeks ago and I love reading it! I am so happy for you! The Lord truly is amazing! And I totally understand about forgetting things, I have a 6 month old, but when I was pregnant I couldnt remember anything! and I love the baby bedding, I love brown and pink!!

I'm so sorry, Kelly, but what you have heard is true. It IS a real thing and it DOES NOT get any better, and the more children you have the worse it gets. When I was pregnant with Ella Grace, I didn't shut Evan's door as I barreled out of the garage. I completely tore the door off my Trailblazer. I had to explain to Derek twice over the phone what had happened. He could not understand how I could wreck the car without another vehicle being involved. I totally blamed it on morning sickness and baby brain!

Anonymous said...

OH, it is sooo true. And if you nurse I think it stays that whole time. I had it so bad after Jac was born that I forgot to pay any bills for a month! I called and explained and they forgave me thank goodness!
I just think that's why we Martin's have such smart kids- they suck our brain cells out while in utero! :)
Your cuz,
Michelle

Oh Kelly...I am smiling from ear to ear b/c I remember those days. It does get a little better after the little one arrives...just a little ;)

Oh girl, let me tell you... 4 times over... get used to it. I am SERIOUSLY convinced babies do not produce their own brain cells, they take some of yours. I have gotten progressively dumber with each child.
Now, after hearing Sarah Palin last night... I'm gonna have to revisit that thought b/c it is obviously not true for everyone.
Before I got pg with Abigail, I remembered everything. I was the one who remembered everything for everyone else. I was always like that.
but goodness... ever since, forget it. I can't remember ANYTHING. I'm used to it now (and everyone who knows me is used to it) so it is rather expected. But when pg with Abigail and it was a new thing. YUCK.
I forgot to take the mortgage payment out of my checking account balance. oops
I hid a deposit I had at school in my music library. I found it 7 months later when preparing for my sub. I was cleaning up the music library and happened upon it by chance. I had NO CLUE I had lost it. None of the people who wrote those checks ever asked about it.
I went into labor that night!
