You Move Me

17 weeks

Little baby H is the size of an Onion!!!!

I spent Saturday feeling worried because I haven't gained any weight and I'm not showing all that much (except at night like when I took this picture) and I just was so worried that the baby wasn't growing. I even tried to measure my stomach and then freaked out to see I measured at 13 (until Laurie explained to me it was centimeters not inches). I even contemplated going to a local clinic to see if they could hear the heartbeat.
So God gave me an early gift - Sunday morning I woke up and was laying on my stomach. And as I lay there in the stillness I started to feel something like popcorn popping in my stomach. It kept on for a while and I switched to my side and still felt it. I woke Scott up to tell him that I had felt our baby! It was the neatest thing in the world! I thank God for the small things in life!

My dad's cousin works at a local pregnancy crisis center and she e-mailed me today to let me know if I wanted to come in - I could get a free ultrasound any time before 20 weeks. I can't decide if I want to do this or not. On one hand - it would be so nice to be reassured that everything is okay but on the other hand - in two weeks - we will be going for that big ultrasound and my parents will be there and Scott's parents will be there by speaker phone and I want to experience all the surprise together. If I go for this ultrasound - I will for sure not let them tell me the sex. (And you don't know how badly I would love for them to tell me). But it would help me relax and enjoy the 20 week ultrasound and not be so nervous about what could be wrong if I knew ahead of time things were okay. What would you do if you were me?

Update: Thank you for all your wonderful comments, suggestions and encouragment. First of all - you have made me feel a lot better about the weight thing. I think this is the first time in my life I've EVER worried about NOT gaining weight. It's always been the opposite.
And second - I've decided NOT to do the ultrasound. It would be a great opportunity but I can make it two more weeks and God has given me enough to be able to trust Him fully so I am believing that everything will be okay. (I got sick at lunch and nearly threw up so I'm wondering if God is telling me he'll give me morning sickness again if I don't quit worrying. ha ha ha ha!) Worry is a sin and it's the biggest stronghold Satan has on me.

I truly believe that your peace of mind is good for the baby. There is nothing wrong with going in a making sure...what a blessing to have someone at the center who is willing to do this for you, right? I would go.

If I were you, I imagine I would jump at the chance! For most women the ultrasound is a time of reassurance, but for you, I imagine you would desire it even more than most....I say go for it! Your family will understand!

Hi Kelly,
I would wait the two weeks and just go to the 20 week U/S at your doctor's appt. Let that be the initial U/S, with family to support you and share in that time. You felt your baby this morning..what a blessing!! It is such a wonderful feeling..I loved it..until the end when I had an elbow or heel stabbing me. Don't worry so much about your weight, you will be one of those that puts it on the most at the end probably!

Fran said...

You could always go in and not let them show you the sex...just look at the baby and the heartbeat and make it pretty quick. my 1st two boys were so "hiding" themself that I couldn't have spotted it if I wanted too. But, by boy #3, he was out there for us all to see very quickly.

Trust me...the surprise won't nearly be as much fun if you know ahead of time. And, its soooooo hard to not tell them.

Get you a quick ultrasound if you can and make sure that all is good. Maybe not even peak at the screen. Then, when you know all is good, rest assured for 2 more weeks and have the surprise of a lifetime....all together. :)

Hugs,
Fran

So exciting to feel those movements! I remember how fun it was, and it only gets better! I say wait until 20 weeks and cash in that ultrasound later when you need a baby fix!

I would go in a heartbeat!
I could not wait for that day to come. And feeling your baby move is the greatest feeling in world. Enjoy it! It does go by fast.

Good luck!

Hey Kelly,

I think I mentioned this once before on a post, but I had only gained around 3 pounds by week 20 or so and my doctor was not worried at all, even though I was. I even went to a nutritionist several times trying to make sure that I was getting enough of everything that he needed to grow. Even my nutritionist assured me that women who lose several pounds have perfectly healthy babies. You are lucky to feel little H move so early. I felt John Michael at 16 weeks and my doctor was surprised because that is early, so I would take it as a divine sign! I worried ALL throughout my pregnancy about all kinds of little things, and I wish that I had not! It's up to you whether or not to go get the US, but it will be so special with everyone there because you'll all be crying and finding out and looking together! What a special time!

Hey Kelly,
I would totally do the ultrasound. Your peace of mind is good for the baby and they can worry you when they are so little and you can't feel them all the time.

Don't worry about the weight gain. I still weigh about 8 lbs less than I did when I got pregnant and I am 8 months! Everyone is different and so is their weight gain.

Good luck, I'm praying for you!

Kelly, I've been "lurking" for several weeks now. I found you from Boomama's Blog. My daughter is expecting our first grandchild =) I cannot even begin to describe how excited we are.....me and my husband!! She will be 24 weeks tomorrow. Her due date is November 25th. And.....it's a boy!!! Believe me, I had no preference as to what the baby was at all.....it is maybe, more "personable" to know what he is. Everything looks fine, so far, and that's all that matters....that my daughter and her baby are doing well. She has only gained 2 pounds so far. But, she feels good, looks good, etc. Her Doc hasn't said that it's a problem.

I love the names that you have chosen. My daughter is still very undecided.

I just have to tell you....my birthday was last Friday. My daughter (Ashley) and her husband got me the best gift! It's a brag book that says "Great Moms get promoted to Grandma" on the front and it has 2 of his ultra sound pictures in it. You can see his precious little profile in one of them so clearly. My heart just melts everytime I look at it. I am so ready for this!!!!

So, now I'm checking on you everyday and am praying for you along with my own children. God bless you.

Hi! I'm delurking here ~ I love reading your blog every day :) I would go have the ultrasound ~ you won't regret it. I loved being able to see my babies on ultrasound as often as I could!! What a blessing to feel baby H's movements! I loved that also!!

Anonymous said...

If the early ultrasound will give you peace of mind then I would definitely do it!

As for the weight gain, or lack thereof, I would not worry too much. I did'nt begin to show or put on much weight until the second half of my pregnancy and I have several friends who have had the same experience. I think this is especially true for first pregnancies.

Can't wait to hear if baby "H" is a boy or a girl!

R said...

feeling the babies move for the first time is the greatest!! i loved that little fluttery feeling, and i even felt it for weeks after each of my girls were born. "phantom kicks" or something, i think i heard someone call that phenomena?

with my first girl, i lost weight at each appointment until the last trimester. i only gained 10 lbs. total. but i think it's because i never felt like eating. with the second girl, i didn't gain any weight. same problem--never hungry.

so i wouldn't worry! each pregancy is different.

Hi Kelly! My name is Taylor and I'm Hillary Russell's cousin. I read Hill's blog regularly and I clicked on your link one day and I've been reading yours regularly ever since. You have such a kind heart, and I want to tell you congratulations on the baby...I know how excited you must be! I have a 17 month old daughter, and when I was at your stage in pregnancy I hadn't grown much either and was concerned but I also started to feel her move right before the 20 week ultrasound. I bet baby H is perfect, and I would wait until the 20 week so it's super special. I've also been praying for you and your little one!

The Golf Widow said...

GO, go, go!I would peak every chance I get.Just be clear that you don't want to know the sex.
Before 20weeks the baby is still small and will look so cute in ultrasound pictures because their whole body still fits in a single shot. You can video the screen and then the grandparents can see this one, too. You are going to drive yourself crazy for the next three weeks. How exciting to feel your first kick. It's amazing. Enjoy :)

Marc and Charity said...

I can't believe you felt the baby move already, that is great!!! I was almost 20 weeks before I felt my first! Maybe 21 or 22 weeks? Can't remember now.

I can't wait to know what you are having!

Preppy Mama said...

Oh, Kelly that is so exciting. I remember that first time I felt my son moving. Its so amazing!

Shannon said...

In order to give you a little peace of mind- I would go in and look at your little one- but make them swear not to tell me what it was.

Praying for you!

Jill said...

I think you will know in your heart what it is that you should do, and I will pray for you to have wisdom concerning your decision.

At currently 37 weeks pregnant, I am still on the lowest end of normal for weight gain, yet I am carrying a healthy sized baby.

Too, I never felt the flutters or gas pains that everyone described as the baby moving. Instead, I felt little thumps, for which our little girl was called 'Thumper' in the beginning. Popcorn popping would be a similar feeling. Isn't that the best, and it only gets better!

Anonymous said...

Do whatever will give you peace of mind. Your worry over your babies starts when they are conceived. It's totally normal to be concerned about your baby's growth.
I'm so glad you felt the baby move. That is the coolest feeling. I love when they get the hiccups, too. :)

Anonymous said...

I know just how you are feeling. I barely gained any weight and I worried...you are totally normal. If you have a chance to ease your mind then don't feel bad if you take it. This whole time is all about you and whatever you need is what is right. Either decision you make will be what is best. I had to have ultrasounds about every doctor's visit...I saved every picture and loved every second. It felt like a special little time that I got to spend with my little girl before we had to share her with the world. Make yourself feel better - whatever choice that means. You are in my prayers.

Love,
Kelly

ps - you look beautiful!

Kristy said...

You are so cute! Yea on the kicks- precious!
Get the ultrasound!! The way I look at it, you have 20 something more weeks until you see Baby H, so getting a chance to see him/her won't happen everyday. Also if you can get a 4d one at about 30 wks- it is SO worth it.
I worried the entire pregnancy with #2. I only gained 14 pounds the whole time (pretty much 2-3 lbs a month, but a few months, I lost weight.) and she would hardly ever move. Every appt I would hold my breath until the doctor would find the heartbeat, because I was so afraid something was wrong, since she never moved. But that is just her calm, sweet little personality- just the same way she was before she was born! =)

amy (metz) walker said...

I wouldn't be able to wait if it were me...but I have to admit, I'd also have a hard time NOT finding out the sex...so I don't know if I could let myself go! I would be SO curious!!!!

Amanda said...

I had the same opportunity to go in to a clinic for a free ultrasound. We went at 15 weeks, and it was precious. One of the deciding factors was that the 15 week ultrasound could be video taped, and our 20 weeks ultrasound did not have that option. It's nice to have the video footage, and we'll switch it over to DVD someday. :)

Really, with you feeling the baby move, you've got to know that God has it under His plan. Living in fear that something is wrong will only wear you out and suck the energy and fun out of this time. Ps. 139 is one of my favorites...take heart in knowing that God is knitting your baby together right now!

Amanda Ledford said...

I don't think I could wait, but I understand wanting to wait to go with your family. I vote for you to go, but not find out the sex (even though it is killing me to know if it is a boy or girl! LOL!) That is so exciting that you are starting to feel him/her move around!!!

suzspeaks said...

Hi Kelly, I've noticed several delurker's on here today, so I thought I'd join!!
First, I love your blog & I'm so happy for you & your husband and have been praying for you!
Second, I'd totally go for the free US. I would not find out the sex either, but peace of mind is worth anything!

I hope you have a great day! I also love how you take your pictures each week with the fruit/vegetable that matches!

Hi
Or another option is just call your regular OB DR. and ask if you can quickly come in to hear the heartbeat, because you are feeling worried. Then you can save your 20 week ultrasound for your family, if you want.

Don't worry about the weight thing, it is normal. (As an RN I can tell you that).

Let God guide you. Whatever you decide will be fine.

Kelly S. (in MI)

Mary said...

I'd go in for the Ultrasound too...Like someone earlier said, any chance to see or hear little one is going to make you so happy!

Amy said...

GO! Relish every glimpse of that dear one while you can! My doctor only did two sonograms with me, and I wish he would have done more. It will make you more relaxed for the BIG REVEAL! : )

I think only you can decide, but I just wanted to let you know that I measured small my entire pregnancy and only gained about eighteen pounds total. I think some people just gain weight differently. I'm sure the little Razorback is perfectly fine and being perfectly knit together.

Laura Ann said...

Good Morning Kelly! Okay, so I am going to be just the opposite of everyone else on here...I think you should wait. Our God is an awesome God and he is protecting you and Baby Harper/Hudson. You have waited so long to share this experience with everyone. I know you are anxious, but what an awesome opportunity to have your parents and your in-laws (on the phone) with you to share in your excitement.

I had this same opportunity when I was pregnant with my Sweet Emma to find out her sex, before my big ultrasound at my Dr. One of my teacher friends volunteered at the local pregnancy crisis center and she said I could come there for Free and have one done. I consulted with my OBGYN on this and they discouraged me and this is why. The one I was going to go to was non profit and all the workers were volunteer and the equipment was all older equipment donated from hospitals and clinics who had gotten newer equipment. My Dr. kept saying what are you going to do if you go there and they misread an ultrasound or tell you misinformation? I never thought about it like that until he presented it to me in that matter. I went back to school the next day and asked the lady if the information was true and she did explain to me that it was not the lastest and greatest equipment and indeed it was older and had been donated by places that no longer needed it.

Just my thoughts...however after I had my ultrasound at my Dr. at 19 weeks and they could only tell me that they were 90% sure I was having a girl...I did go to the clinic. I needed to know 100% so I could start painting the nursery and get my bedding ordered. Well, it was a completly different experience and much more distorted at the clinic due to the outdated equipment. They did confirm that I was having a girl, but it was no where near the excitement I felt with my Dr and seeing it so clearly on the screen.

I encourage you to wait and stick with your original plan and know that you will be in the right place and all the measurements will be done 100% accurately and you will have no worries when you leave there.

I am praying for you and that your worry will subside and you will find peace in knowing that your sweet baby is just fine.

I can not wait to hear what you decide to do.

annalee said...

that popcorn popping feeling is the best! i am so excited you felt that. i remember it feeling like God is tapping you as a reminder that your baby is growing away in there.
as for the ultrasound i think either way you go is a good decision!

Kristin said...

How exciting that you felt the baby moving!!

I don't know what I'd do about the ultrasound. I love the element of surprise so I would want to wait. But on the other hand, I wouldn't want to pass up an opportunity to have an ultrasound! :)

I know you'll do what you feel is best!

Morning Kelly,

you know good and well that I don't know anything about having a baby but I say wait....first part of proverbs 16.32 says "patience is better than power...." I don't know if that helps but maybe just choose to keep on trusting and let this little temptation pass...showing yourself to yet again be faithful. He who began a good work Kelly.... love you friend.

I would go! There is nothing better than seeing that baby in your belly! I wish I could have done it more than I did! (yes, don't find out the sex until the big ultrasound!)

CAMoore said...

I would go in early for the peace of mind! Not that I think anything is wrong with your baby, but because I totally understand wanting to see that baby on the screen as many times as possible! Plus it's not like Scott wouldn't be there with you - you just tell the nurse you don't want to know the sex and go from there!

You looks great girl! PS. I love onions!!!

Amy said...

Good morning! Okay, I couldn't stand it any longer and just had to have a say, too. First, you are absolutely the cutest thing EVER! I am so excited for you and pray for you daily! Second, if you were me, you would have already had that ultrasound by the time you were reading this! I had my 4th child last year, and I loved EVERY SINGLE ULTRASOUND! For a worrier like me, just seeing my little one - seeing that sweet little heart beat - would make me totally relax and calm down. That is, until I left in TOTAL excitement about having seen my baby! Your family will totally understand if you go now, especially since you are concerned. Anyway, take care, keep us posted, and God BLESS!!!

Amy

P.S. If you get the chance (or inclination), check out chasing-fireflies.com. They have a quilted light blue playmat with Hudson's name on it! (I LOVE seeing my children's names in catalogs! :) )

You are adorable and absolutely GLOWING! I would take the u/s... just for the reassurance and so that you can just lay back and relax for the next one. Of course, I would tell them to keep their lips sealed on the gender. It will be so special to have your family there for that! Can't wait to hear! :)

Heather said...

I think you should do what you feel is best for you and Baby H, and I think you should definitely pray about it. Remember that God is faithful. He has blessed you with this beautiful baby (especially if Baby H looks like you--you look so cute in that picture ;). Love you friend!

I would say go for it!!!! Just don't find out the sex! That is sooooooooooooooo sweet of your cousin to offer!!!! =)

I'm so glad you felt the baby move!

Julie said...

Oh, I just don't know. I'm like you I would want that reassurance but if I "accidentally" found out the gender I'm not sure I could keep a secret. It would be a very neat memory to find out with all the family. But I can also understand your nervousness. Maybe if you went for the early ultrasound you just shouldn't watch the screen in case something pops up and you can tell if its a boy or a girl.!!

Let us know!! I'm waiting until the big reveal!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Shoot, I would have already been there! Of course, this comes from a person who takes a pregnancy test a week before her period too and then keeps taking them to see the line get darker each time for confidence.

What a precious gift the Lord gave you to feel the baby move in you! Not sure if this will reassure you but at 17 weeks, I'd only gained 1.5 pounds and hadn't started showing at all, but everything was wonderful at the ultrasound and it seems as though overnight, my preggo belly has popped out just in the past day or two! I haven't felt the baby yet though. :) And you look great, just beautiful!

It seems like the Lord already gave you a precious gift of reassurance, just like you wrote, to feel the baby move. He is with you, Kelly, and He is with that little one in you, too. I pray that you would be at peace, trusting the Lord. Whether you end up going to the clinic or waiting 2 more weeks, I pray that the decision would be made in full assurance and trust in Him that He is with you and caring for you, and the reminder that He did bless you with the reassurance of feeling the baby move! How exciting that 20 week appointment will be!

p.s. I promise you will gain weight! My first trimester I lost weight but I made up for it in the end!

Hi! I have been reading your blog for about a month now and love it!! I found it through my BFF Meredith(Eisele Family News)! If it were me, I would probably go for the early u/s! I absolutely loved seeing my babies and it did give me that reassurance that everything was okay! Like you said..you can just not find out the sex and save that special moment for the 20 week u/s! I love the names you have picked out!! I wanted SOOO badly for my son's name to be Hudson, but hubby wasn't real sure of it for his first name but agreed for a middle name..So my son became Grant Hudson! I still love the name! Also, I only gained 6 pounds my entire pregnancy with my daughter and about 14 with my son! The doctors always told me not worry because the baby was growing and getting the nutrition he/she needed and I was getting what was left!

Girl, you do what you feel is right in your heart. I definitely understand wanting the reassurance. But, I want to share a couple of verses that I read the other day:
"He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD" Psalm 112:7
and "It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man" Psalm 118:8

I needed both of these and hopefully they will comfort you, too. Don't let Satan put those thoughts in your head. Your Heavenly Father has not brought you this far to let you down, sweet friend. Oh, how much you will be rewarded for having patience and waiting! I pray for you and Baby H every single day!

These early weeks of pregnancy are so tough especially when you have to wait a month inbetween each appointment. I didn't feel Landon until after 20 weeks so that is awesome that you are feeling the baby now!! I'm sure everything is fine with the baby and I would wait until the big ultrasound since it's only a couple of weeks away. You will be amazed at how the baby looks and moves and you will be able to experience this with your parents! So special!

Praying for you guys!! I can't wait to find out!

I would wait. If you can't wait then I would NOT look at the monitor but just ask whom ever is doing it if everything is okay and that you don't want to know the sex of the baby but to just know if everything is okay. I know it took us forever to get pregnant and I was a worry wart. When the baby first starts to kick it felt like butterflies to me and I do believe God gave you a sign to let you know all is well. What ever you decide it will be just fine :o) P.S. Love the visualization of how big the baby is getting. I always wonder what your going to use next!!!

I've been reading your blog for a while now, but this is my first comment. I just had our first baby 4 months ago and I didn't start showing until about 20 weeks. I also didn't gain very much weight either, so I wouldn't worry. That being said, what a blessing to feel the baby move! That was probably my most favorite part of being pregnant! Which ever ultrasound is your first, God will bless it. I will be praying for you, your decision, and the baby.

That is such an awesome thing to feel the baby move for the first time! Last year I felt Mabry move for over a week before it dawned on me that those little "butterfly wings" were her.
I think that peace of mind is one of the best things to have while you are pregnant. You don't want to stress. I had a few ultrasounds done with Mabry last year for peace of mind. There is nothing wrong with that. But I agree with waiting to hear the sex until everyone is there and have that big moment together.
Pray about it. You will know what is right for you.

I admire your strength, Kelly. Two weeks is not that much longer. I know you are doing the right thing, and Baby H is just fine!!!

It is hard not to worry, I did constantly, but I admire your strength. God is so good and it is an exciting day when you feel that life inside of you moving around for the first time! What a blessing! You look absolutely beautful in this picture!

I came across your blog from my sweet friend, Annalee's. You look GOOD girl! I am 26 weeks pregnant with twin girls (Reese and Riley) and by 16 weeks I had probably gained 15 pounds... now granted, it's twins, but still-- you look great! I worry too-- I've worried thru all 26 weeks, but God whispers in my ear, comforts me with his peace, and my wonderful doctor is always so reassuring. Praying for a healthy wonderful pregnancy for you!

Kelly,

I am sooo excited for you and your husband about your baby! It is so amazing to see God answer "yes" to our long awaited prayers. I was looking at your September 2006 blog and you mentioned a bible study you were doing. It was about how men think...was it good? Could you please tell me if you recommend it and the name? Thank you! We are looking for a new study in our small group. Please let me know if you have any other recommendations!

Thank you,
Melissa

I felt the same way between doctor visits! Being pregnant is so great, but so nerve racking! Hang in there. 20 weeks will be here before you know it. Being a first time Mom, I'm surprised you have felt the baby this early. Isn't it wonderful! There's more to come!

79 Comments? Girl, you are famous! :) You look SO cute. And I am so glad you decided to wait on the ultrasound. It will be so fun to experience it all together. And I can't wait to know what you're having!!! And isn't it wonderful to feel that little person move around in you? It makes it all the more real. After mine were born, I missed that life in me, the movement. You know?

You look great! :_

How exciting! It really emphasizes what a precious miracle God works in us--that we can grow another human being in our tummy! WOW!

Only two more weeks! Yay!
