I've been thinking about hair a lot lately. I don't know if it's because I'm trying to grow mine out or because of Big Mama's hilarious hair time line post or because last night I was at Bible Study watching a Beth Moore video and she talked for about 10 minutes on her hair and it was just hilarious. Her hair amazes me. She was talking about her texas hair and she said "the higher the hair - the closer you are to God. ha!" She showed a picture of her family when it her girls were small and she said "there we were the five of us : Her husband, Beth, the 2 girl's and Beth's hair."
Then I started thinking about how big my hair was in high school. No really - it defied gravity - you will not believe it. And I think I may do a hair time line post of mine own tonight - because it is so hilarious.
And I have started something new last week. I have always been the "have to wash my hair in the morning every morning" type of girl no matter where I am or what circumstances I am under. My hair is wavy and coarse and difficult and it requires many products, hair dryers, two brushes and a straightening iron just to look decent enough to leave the house. But all of those products and all of the color I have to use has been killing my hair. So I saw recently on E (the source of all my news) that you really should only wash your hair every other day - in fact some stars only wash their hair once a week. (That's a little extreme)
So I've tried it for a week - and I have to say - it's working great. I think my hair actually looks better on the days I don't wash it and it might be my imagination but I think it's already looking healthier. Maybe I can go longer between color jobs. Hallelujah! And I'm early to work on those fabulous days I don't wash my hair!
So - how often do you wash your hair and what are you hair trials? Because we ALL have them!

I wish I could skip a day, but I just can't handle it - I feel like I HAVE to wash mine every day. I use shampoo/conditioner meant for color-treated hair - it's supposed to help extend the life of the color, but I would love to go longer in between color jobs if I could. I've heard people put baby powder on their roots to make it seem less greasy, but I've never tried it.
I wash mine every 2-3 days. I also have wavy, thick, coarse hair, and it's less frizzy and it styles better on day 2 & 3. And mine is so thick that I always have "big hair", regardless of style or era! :)
My hair is so thin and fine that it would be grease city if I went one day. I wash it once and sometimes twice a day. Product rarely hold in my hair. It will be fine in the morning and fall out by mid day. Wish I knew something to help me with that!
I have naturally curly hair, and have to blow dry, straighten, etc... too. I have to wash mine every day, though. It doesn't look bad, but it just makes me feel yucky if I don't. I wish I could stand skipping a day!
And, oh yeah, have you watched Miss America yet?
Oh Kelly! You know I'm big on hair washing days! I started washing my hair every other day about 2 years ago and its the best thing. I'm pretty crazy about the schedule though. When I'm going on trips I have to count out the days to make sure my hair washing days fall at the right time. Some times I can even go two days! It's awesome! You will be so free once you train your hair! It will thank you for it! I'm so excited for you! Obviouly, I'm a total nut about this subject! And a little obsessed!
Every other day and it ALWAYS looks better the day it is not washed. Can't wait to see your hair post.
Blessings,
Linda
I have to wash my hair every day or my blonde turns to black!!!! YUCK YUCK. I hate that I have to do it. Plus, I have blonde hair but I color it lighter....and then my hair grows like a weed.I feel like I am constantly coloring it.
I'm an every other day kinda girl. It is just so much easier... And I do agree, my hair always looks better on the second day! How is that possible?!
i skip a day because i'm at home most of the time. that's always ponytail day.
I have hair just like yours--coarse and wavy/curly. I use tons of hair products and straighten it daily. I have been sick for the past few days, though, and so I skipped a wash or two. And I love the way it looks, but not the way it feels. It gets really soft and flat the second day. Then I wash it and it's back to coarse again. I have considered washing it every other day, but not sure I could take the way it feels??
I have to wash my hair AT LEAST once a day. Definitely first thing in the morning because my hair is SO oily! It does seem to get better and I get older, but I just know I couldn't go a day without washing it. I heard that on E too and just laughed. I wish!
I learned to skip a day when I had Mary Margaret! I was just too darn tired to deal with my hair every day. My hair also is wavy and I have to straighten it. I just want some sort of new cut. I feel like I've been rockin' the same style for at least 10 years:)
Can't wait to see your hair-u-mentary!
Kelly, your hair is so pretty. Mine is also coarse and curly, and on top of that, extremely thick! The Chi iron is the best thing that ever happened to me! Ha! I love to go every other day without washing if I can. My hair always feels smoother the next day. It's harder for me to do it in the Summer though. When it's hot, I just feel better washing it every day, but the humidity does nothing for my hair! Oh, and I, too, had huge hair in high school. I guess it was the style. Boy, was I stylin'!
Oh Kelly, these poor people that feel they have to wash their hair every day. I used to be one of those! TRUST me, all you have to do is be patient, give it a couple weeks and it wil be great! Maybe we should start praying for them to have the courage to take the step like you did! :)
I used to faithfully wash my hair every day. Since I have lived here and found a better hairdresser, she told me not to do that and to wash it every other day. It is better but styling my hair has always been an issue. Im hardly ever happy with it! Oh well!
I would prefer to wash my every day, but I don't even get to shower every day due to the boys. :) It is usually in a pony tail anyway. I'm thinking of growing mine a couple more inches in order to donate it and cut it short this spring. Funny, I was just thinking of doing a post on hair too. :)
I wash my hair every other day, but on those days, I hit the bath tub and just pin it up! My best "up-dos" are on those days where my hair has product in it, but not enough to make it gross!
Well now that I have a baby, my hair doesn't get washed everyday. Drying it takes up too much time, because I also have thick hair. It's much more freeing not washing it every day!
I am at least an every other day girl and a lot of the times I can push it one past that! My hair is like yours and you will be SOOOO glad that you made the switch! It is amazing how much easier it is to deal with. Even when I leave mine curly, I think it looks better.
Oh, and I agree with Hillary. I will be in prayer for boldness and patience for those considering this move. It really is life changing! :)
Kelly........I had to laugh at your post b/c it reminded me of my early days! We used to use these picks and get our hair to stand up practically. Then spray it with that Aqua Net to make it stay stiff! LOL
I wash mine every other day. I agree the 'other day' has the best hold. :o) My hairdresser told me that it's actually better for your hair that way too.
Oh and for products, try the Big Sexy Hair products. They make your hair have volume. I love it!
My best hair secret is Redken #16 Gel. It absolutely changes the texture of your hair especially if it is fine and limp. It will hold my hair in shape for two days! Mom
I have tried that whole washing the hair every other day thing...but it just doesn't work for me. My hair will be so greasy on the second day. It is so gross, I can even feel it. So I quit doing it. I wish I could though.
Hi Kelly, I've been reading your blog for the past couple months and have just started reading your posts from the beginning, they are such a blessing! I wanted to comment on this post because I seem to have hair similar to yours...thick, wavy, etc. I use a blow dryer, multiple brushes/combs and a flat iron, not to mention I highlight every month! So for the past couple years or so I've been washing my hair every other day and I agree that it looks better on the day I don't wash it. And it definitely helps save the color by washing every other day! I also found a great product from cakebeauty.com, it's a hair refresher (like a talc powder) which you can sprinkle on your roots to soak up any excess oil and it smells nice too!
